This is an interesting thread, but I think it'd be much better served if it actually answered questions as opposed to just being a giant list of subs and what they have to offer. The problem newbies have is that reading through all of the descriptions doesn't really help. So, if I might, I suggest doing it in the following manner:
SPL SUBS:
list
SQL SUBS:
list
PURE SQ SUBS:
list
SUBS THAT DO WELL IN SMALL ENCLOSURES:
list
SUBS THAT SOUND BETTER IN SEALED BOXES:
list
SUBS THAT SOUND BETTER IN PORTED BOXES:
list
SUBS THAT NEED A LOT OF POWER TO RUN:
list
SUBS THAT CAN BE RUN WITH SMALLER AMPS:
list
...and so on.
Even better if each list were done in descending order of the OP's impression of quality, with price listed. That way a potential newbie can go "well I don't have a lot of space, so let's see... oh hey this is the highest one on the list that's under $300! Sweet!"
