What exact equipment does your buddy have? Because it doesn't take much to beat one Rockford p3 woofer. That's low end. Acouple flea market 12s on a hifonics amp would prly put it to shame lol.
Pretty much it comes down to the enclosure and install. U can have the better equipment but if you don't know how to use it you will fail.

Basically what he said.^
set your gains right, make a better box and dont be a p*ssy with the output. turn it up till it stops getting louder and go back a couple of notches and monitor temperatures of the subwoofer cone. If its hot then lower the sub level. If its not, either keep it as is or try to push a lil bit more and monitor temps again afterwards. There is no set amount of gain you should be at so dont think you already got full output since you think you have the full 5 volt preout from the 80 prs. You could very well be waay undergained or have extremely weak signal.
PS if you want me or @C1500martin to school your buddy and shut him up with that a real bass system sounds like, We will gladly do so. We are local.

If your box is ported just use your sniffer. If u smell coil turn it down.

Well heres the deal. Every time I turn my fkn gains up and turn up the vol to 30-40 my amp stops playing sometimes..Bass just stops fkn playing. I havent seen if it goes into protection mode..N also Im not from LA im from Nor Cal lol.. I dont know the exact name of the **** he has but well his front mids are alright their some JVCs and have decent coil size bbut his Subs are some Gravitys.He has a chevy avalange n i got a 98 accord coupe.. I know rockfords are **** thats why I havent gotten the other One. *** soon as I get money Ima buy some Fkn Sundown Sa 12. Oh but well I showed him my amp gains and He kinda shut up. I told em watch I turned my gains halfway up turned the bass boost all the way up and my freq till it sounded loud af and then turned on my fkn Epicenter and well it started pounding loud af n he told me to turn it down lol..But well I like my music blending in not all fkn bassy af.

Ohhh and my box Is ported I don't know the dimentions I traded it for a 12 ported box and some old wires I took out when I put the Knuz in..Pretty good deal if you ask me but this box is for 2 12s and is atleast 1.5 cubic feet x chamber. I use to have 2 but one had the cone ripped off and it got burnt lol..When I first put the 2 12s in the box we were testing at and my brothers neighbor came out retty ******* mad and said this " Would you guuys please turn your ******* music down because my house's frame is shaking and stuff that we got on the wall is falling off. And they are holy one fell and broke down" I just laughed when the woman left thinking ohh **** is this really that loud. Ohhh and my Epicenter has a DB mic and its usually over 120 DB when I crank it all the way up..Its gone up to 137.But I dont know if its accurate and dont think it is lol..

Your epicenter is one thing that needs to go That thing is absolute garbage that will ruin your subs and is most likely the reason your system shuts down. Keeping things short, that **** dirtys up your signal like a mofo. Box design is very important, if you got it randomyly off craigslist, chances are its a prefab or its a badly designed one that wont match your subwoofer. 1.5 cubes aint sh*t for a 12. Thats on the extremely small side and really sounds like prefab junk.
Again if you stick an SA 12 in your system the way it is, things wont get better at all. Theres obvious bigger install flaws going on here. You also dont know the concept of using a sub level to adjust for blending or to bump it up. I'd seriously recommend you learning how to set gains with a digital multi meter and invest in an oscilloscope or DD-1

Well even If I remove it. I was running w/o it for like a month and I don;t really remember but I think It would shut down..But I think your right because At first it wouldnt do that when I first bought it(I got it off of ebay used for 110) and it was good till i ******* hoooked up the POS epicenter..I think my cousin is coming to my house tomorrow Ill just sell it to him and sell my p3 and Ill have enough money for a Sundown Sa 12..And also I dont always have it on I have it off all the time and sometimes I listen to spanish music and turn it on for a bit..But yeahh im pretty sure my box is prefab made. Probly next week i'll go to home depot and grab some MDF so I can mak my own box. I dont know much how to make one but hey no one was born an expert.

Invest in a multi-meter or a volt meter and see what your voltage readings are while playing heavy bass drops. You could be very well having a ground issue also.
Still gotta get rid of that epicenter. Thats cancer for subs.

Trunk vs. Avalanche you're at a terrible disadvantage trying to get loud. If you were running a pair of subs and are now running 1 you're probably not getting max power from your amp.
