Sub too loud during soft volume, then not enough

I have a KAC 707 old Kenwood that is bridged to an Infinity DVC sub in a bandpass box through my stock deck with RCA's through a PAC.

When the volume is soft, there is so much bass I have the amp gained turned all the way down and the bass at -6 on the hu and it's all I can hear. When I turn it up, there is not enough bass. So I turn it up to about +1. It sounds muddy and nasty all the time, and I am getting all new stuff. But what is going on here?

????

Your OEM HU probably has an attenuation circuit that reduces lower frequencies as the volume is increased. Many factory stereos have this to keep from blowing the OEM speakers.
So if I get a big amp and nice speakers with the stock hu how do I get it to sound good?
