sub positioning factor

I noticed that alot of hatch vehicles face their subs up. Would facing the sub up in a trunk car decrease the amount of spl then facing the sub to the rear or front of the car? or does this just involve testing to figure out?

Also, how would the sound be affected if the sub was faced up and the port to the front of the car?

Thanks

Dustin

If you HAVE to fire it up I'd look into attaching a big piece of 3/4" MDF to the underside of the trunk lid, so it'll fire into that and will also stiffen up the trunk lid. I also considered welding a piece of 1/8" plate steel to the underside. Even if you stiffen it up a ton, the trunk latch will become the weak link and flex/distort, but the lid wouldn't vibrate nearly as bad.

I considered doing this when I put the 2 HD's in, but did them front firing/sealed off instead. Is that an option??

I just recently flipped my box around in my trunk car. Previously I had it port and sub both firing to the rear and it sounded bad. I don't have any deadener so all I heard was rattling. I turned the box aroun, port/sub firing into the cabin, trunk NOT sealed from the cabin, and the SQ increased dramatically while there was a slight drop in SPL. I'm overall more pleased with it firing into the cabin since I care more about it sounding good than getting super loud.

If you're going for SPL though, in a trunk car, port/sub back is the way to go unless you can seal off your trunk and fire into the cabin. Also make sure not to skimp on the deadening if you fire it to the rear.

in my car i've got the sub and port up (only way it'd fit) and it gets pretty lound. i can't wait till i get it all firing back. the best thing i found to stiffen up the deck lid is to spray expanding foam insulation 'into' the frame of the lid. my lid doesn't rattle at all!
