Very much so. The box design (those you mentioned) as well as size and tuning frequency (in the case of ported and bandpass) is what determines how the subwoofer actually performs.

Yes. Most subs will typically have a type of box they are best suited towards.

and how do you know.
Good indicator is usually the T/S parameters.

Generally it's best to follow the manufacturer's recommendation.
