Sub Placement? SUV

I own a 94 Toyota 4Runner. I built a sub box and placed it on the side over the wheel well. Well since then I don't like the box, its to bulky. so I have to deceide on how to build my next box.

Should I face the sub forward or backwards?

I am builbing a box ~1.25 cubic ft, wedged shape and sealed (conserving space). The wedge will flow along with the back side of the seat.

Should I build the box for the sub facing forward with a 2-3" space between the sub and seat or should I build the sub facing the back window with a cover to protect it from stuff I throw into the back.

I know the Amp is a Pheonix Gold Octane-R 5.0:1... sub I think will be a 12" JL Audio 12w3v2-d4.

So which way should I build my box...

Against the back seats facing the rear or up towards the roof.

i would try to get it as close to the rear tailgate as i could. make sure the tailgate is well deadened.

I'm not going to do that. I open my tailgate everyday, so that isn't possible.

like said towards the gate..i have a jeep and ive tryed subs facing front, up, and rear and the best sound ive got was towards the rear.

I have a Jeep Grand Cherokee and facing them to the rear worked best, in my mom's nissan pathfinder i am fiberglassing some cases to match the wheel weild and then facing them half back, kinda to the center of the tailgate and up a little bit....it will sound good, in my jeep they are both facing straight back and a little up, kinda to the middle of the glass of the hatch, i use my tailgate everyday too so this worked really well, i dont have to worry about something rubbing up against my subs now. Thats what i wuold suggest, PM me if you need any help.
