Sub hitting rapidly at a certain volume

I just installed a cd player, amp, and subwoofer in my Ranger. I have done plenty of installs without one problem, until now.

The sub hits fine at low volumes, once I hit a higher volume the sub will start hitting rapidly(nonstop), even if I turn the volume all the way down it wont stop. The only way I can get it to stop is by pulling the RCA's out of the amp or turning the amp gain knob down 1/4 turn (down to half). I had a different cd player in the truck last week and different sub, same amp. The amp acted fine on my other sub, but was wired up 4 ohm so it never reached 300w like it is hitting now.

Where do I need to start on diagnosing this?

Headunit was used, amp was used, sub is brand new.

Also wires are nowhere near touching, and the amp is 300RMS at 2 Ohm and the sub is 300RMS.

Alright bypassed the amp gain knob and its in the headunit. Now it will do it all the time. Thanks for your alls help. In the meantime I have an old Alpine CD unit I can install.

Confirmed, I just installed a really old Alpine I had sitting around and now it works perfect. Are there any known problems with rcas on Kenwood units?

Glad to hear you found the issue... I don't know anything about kenwoods but someone will //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

That does sound similar to what mine does, I'll take a video and post it this weekend so you guys can weigh in.

Getting a good voltage reading does not mean good power transfer. You could read 13.8v out of a 24 AWG wire. Recheck your amplifier's ground and...

That would be a function of the harness, not the HU, I think. Have you looked into a Maestro or iData interface? i would check with crutchfield...

thanks DB, that definitely helps swallowing a $300 price tag 😂 these would essentially be running midbass for me too
