Sub Cancellation?

Hi

I've been wanting to put an awsome system in Xtera for a while now. I have every thing pretty much decided except for what my sub enclosure will look like.

I really like the look of this design because it leaves much of my trunk open but still looks cool. However, I am wondering if because the subs are facing each other if cancelation will occur. I would be planning to put 2 Polk/MoMo MM2104 subs in the enclosure.

Any and all help is appreciated

Thx

Only way to tell is to try it... I don't think you would get enough canellation to make a big difference. However, if you want a setup like that, you will have to build small sealed enclosures, which will sacrifice your output quite a bit.

You could try building a ported, downfiring box if you still want all your cargo space.

There's room in the left and right rear sections, nearest the rear hatch for a sealed enclosure. I THINK JL sells a stealth box for X's.

Another choice is a reverse wedge box right behind the rear seats that will still give you some cargo room.

I have an '03 Xterra.

common misconception.

people generally define direction as Left and Right.

for a pressure creating piston, the directions are In and Out.

even though the woofers are moving towards each other, and thus the averaged cone displacement is 0, well, they are still both moving into the cabin, thus the pressure is still increaseing!

*note, any time speakers are not close to each other, where close is related to inverse of frequency played, cancelation can occure. this is true regardless of direction though. because woofers play bass, "close" may be "within 10ft". or more likely, "inside the car".

why can't the boxes in the picture be ported? or made to be ported? it seems that a port can be placed at the oposite end

Thanks a ton guys.

I believe the car that is in that pic is a VW passat, but the rear seats might be removed.

DJman37 do you have any pics of the setup in your Xtera (if you have one in it of course).

If something like this doesnt cause much cancelleation what does?

Also some one told me to wire one of the subs backwards. ie Amp+ -> Sub-. So while one sub is going out the other is going in. I am dubious is this safe?

I'll throw it in in the morning and I'll take some pics tomorrow. I've mounted amps on each of the back seats before. With the back seats up, you have a wedge/triangle area available to mount amps to a box and conceal it/them behind the seats.

my box looks like

DO NOT wire subs out of phase unless 1 of a pair is mounted inverted. You still want the cones to move in the same direction at the same time!

slap whoever told you that. Unless one of the subs is inverted, you won't hear the slightest bit of bass due to complete cancellation.
