Stanky sub?

i just recently upgraded to an alpine 9883 head unit and it sounds awesome. though when im playing songs with bass at low hz such as young jeezy songs i start to smell a little stink from the sub. It doesnt smell like burning but it smells like its getting real warm.

I have the LPF at 80 and its about the same on the amp.

is this bad for the sub????

Did the same situation occur with your older head unit?... I dont know much about your older HU, but your newer one is probably far better. Although I really didnt like the tuning options in that unit that the 9887 offers(Especially for going active, something the 9883 cant do.)...which is why I sold it for the 9887.

Whatever you set the LPF on the head unit...is the signal that your amp will get....so it shouldnt be bad for the sub. Just means anything over 80hz your sub wont play(well not exactly, their are slopes.. so it will play a little over but nothing too high.

its an 12" RE SX

but yeah i think its just the sub is getting pushed a little harder with a clearer signal then the pioneer 3900. the pioneer was a piece.

also when i went back there the sub itself was a little warm.

Is it an Elemental Designs subwoofer?

Probably more RCA voltage causing your amp to make more power at same old gain setting.

That combined with playing super low bass that is below most tuning frequencies is probably causing it.

Maybe back the gains down a lil, it will keep sub from getting stinky at all and probably increase the overall life of the driver.

1. is it ported, might be below tuning frequency

2. if you have a SSF maybe turn it on and kill the super lows like below 30Hz.

I see you can relate!!! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif:laugh://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif:laugh://content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/laugh.gif.48439b2acf2cfca21620f01e7f77d1e4.gif

what ohm is? and what is the wattage of the amp?
ive hurd that low volts running to a low imp without the proper voltage will make the vc start to burn sum kind of stress from the low volts and the ohm load.
i have no idea what low volts are...

but low voltage can kill an amplifier... as can running a low impedance. but most amps have protection against these things. but if they dont, low voltage will fry the power supply's, and there is on telling when they will take out with them...

errrrm...its a bridged 2 channel at 4 ohms and should get a little above 850W. its the kicker zx850.2

i had to turn the gains up from the previous settings. rca should be 4V

the port is tuned at 32 hz but i know re recomends 33 hz. could that be the problem?

im not very familiar with an SSF but i read a little about them and know they regulate frequency. how do i know if i have one or not, and is it located on the amp or head unit?
