So if I where to wire directly to the amp now, how could I do it? Would I just drill a hole in the terminal somewhere and run it through? Any issues with sound leaks or anything like that?

I just drill holes in the mdf and seal it up with some black caulk.

If you were only concerned with function and not aesthetics, couldn't you also run the wire through a port?

you could but I dont like looking at wires.
