Hi all,

I am brand new to this forum and car audio forums in general but not new to car stereo.

I am thinking about replacing my 5 year old MB Quart Discus DKD-116, 6 1/2", door speakers with a new pair and need some advice please.

My music ranges from Frank Sinatra, Annie Lennox to AC/DC depending on the mood. I prefer quality but at a modest budget. I do crank up the volume to "annoying" levels but not all the time.

I have looked at the info and specs for: MB Q Discus DKF-116 coax and DSF-216 comp...I really like the sound of the MB's. They remind me somewhat of my Paradigm home speakers. Polk MMC-650 coax, db6500 comp and db6501 comp. I have not listened to Polk speakers but will try to later on today.

I am open to suggestions of other brands within the $200 to $250 price range.

My current system:

JVC KD-AR770 head unit

Eclipse 36401 amp (4 channel running 2 channels to fronts and back channels to sub) 4x40 watt...does a good job for my tastes.

MB Quart Discus DKD-116 front speakers

MB Quart DWC 254/258 10" sub in enclosure sitting on rear seat floor hehehe.

The head unit is brand new (it replaces a 5 year old Alpine CDS-7892 so I can enjoy all my music on a usb drive instead of cd's and honestly the JVC has much better sound quality than the Alpine which surprised me) while the rest is 5 years old.

Thanks for the reply Dave.

To add to the confusion, lol, I was at my local shop today to see their offerings and the salesperson I spoke to recommended the JL VR650CSI 6 1/2" component speakers. They did not have them installed to listen to but he has them installed in his Civic and brought me out to his car to give them a listen. I was impressed. They were very clear and crisp without being harsh. I will do some more research. At least I enjoy the experience of listening to new hardware.

JL makes a good product...but remember, for any speakers you choose, the installation is going to make a far greater difference in what you hear than the product itself //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

I'd also see if you could find a Memphis dealer around...I've been quite impressed by the Sync6's that I've had.

Very true Jim.

Fortunately it is a very clean install. Clean wire runs and as minimalistic as possible. The amp does not draw much power so no problems there. If I go component I will use the opportunity, while the panels are off the doors and I am making modifications for the tweeters and crossover units I will add Dynamat to the doors as able.

I have been doing this sort of stuff for around 30 years but not real often and usually curbside so time is of the essence. I have a garage now and with my job only a 5 minute walk from the home I can leave the car unassembled without worry until it is finished.

It has been a long time since my last install and I am getting excited about it hehehe. My wife is also "side eyeing" me hehehe always a good sign...she would be happy with an analog push button radio though appreciates the sound of a good system just not fussy like me.

Now I am thinking about replacing the amp for a more powerful model...sheesh the wife will be shakin' her head at me for sure.
