I don't get the problem here. they paid $25 for the room not $27 since the refund was tampered with. 25 + 3 (refund) = 28 + 2 (kept by bell boy) = 30. No money missing....

Be careful about accepting what you are told! The flaw is in the phrase "plus the $2 which the bellboy got." This should not be added; it should be subtracted, since the $2 the bellboy got is part of the $27 dollars the three men spent altogether. If you subtract the $2 from the $27 you get the $25 that goes into the till.

9x3=27

27+2 =29

and they both SHOULD be coming to same outcome.

try, if they would have split 45bucks, and same thing happened.

pay 15 each and gotten 5 returned, well 3

16x3=48

48+2=50

its something to do with the way the beellhop kept $2...

after the bellhop, they actually paid $27 for the room (since they only saw $3 returned)

so the room was $25, and actually $27 after the tip... and at the end they each paid 9... 9+9+9 = 27

its not a flaw. its just hows its worded together.

they origanaly paid 30 dollars and got a were supposed to get a 5 dollar refund

(30-5)/3= 8.333

(8.333+1)*3= 28

plus the 2 dollars the bellboy took = 30

That is the correct mathmatically answer. Well thats what we came up with anyway. When you use simple addition and subtraction it comes out right. But when you multiply it ( the 9 x 3 =27 + $2 tip =29) is what screws you up. Sorrry for the headache it is for an extra credit for my daughters math class. If she comes back with the answer she gets extra credit. I wanna stangle that da*n teacher is what I want to do. Thanks dudes, Later.....
