wtf can u guys not read my answer? you don't add the two dollars the bell boy kept, you add the three dollars ther boys got back. the two dollars is what you add the the $25. So $25 + $2 + $3 = $30.

3x10=30. 30-5=25. 3x9=27. 27-2=25.

The bellboy gave ONE of the guys the $3, and the guy gave EACH of the other people one dollar.

Correct. But that is the point of word problems is to confuse you. It has you expecting to get 30. but you only need 25. 25 needs to be your total after you work it out. so you do 3x9=27. MINUS the 2 the bell boy kept, and you get 25 which is how much they actually paid for the room.

Be careful about accepting what you are told! The flaw is in the phrase "plus the $2 which the bellboy got." This should not be added; it should be subtracted, since the $2 the bellboy got is part of the $27 dollars the three men spent altogether. If you subtract the $2 from the $27 you get the $25 that goes into the till.
