Why such a bigg crossover

From what im reading these are some of the greatest audiophile grade speakers the late 90s produced

Looks like a 24 dB slope crossover -- they tend to be fairly big when quality components are used.

Poly caps, ribbon coils.. No expense spared in that crossover.

I doubt the drivers themselves are that special compared to what's available these days, but those "high end" component sets of days gone by gave you some really nice passive crossovers.
