The Graveyard Shift
Well guys my life has changed a lot since I got out of high school. Probably the most noticable is that my girlfriend of over 1 year cheated on me and then just acted like I wasnt alive. Anyways I was thinking of joining the Army reserve because the money that they promised I would make. I scored a 73 on my asvab and that was when I was a junior in high school so I know I can do a lot better than that. I had a 25 on my act's and have a 3.7 GPA accumulated throughout high school. I was going to still go for my law degree and the army would probably help out on that too as long as I got the job I wanted. Since I dont have a girlfriend anymore I wont have to worry about the time away at basic and during my MOS. So what I was wondering for all you guys in the Army is it worth it? It will be in the army reserve for me and I will possibly go to ROTC in college to become an Officer while in College. Any help on this would be appreciated thanks.

talk to JaJay721...he wouldn't recommend going into the army for the reason that you are choosing to. But he was in Army Reserves so he knows what it is like and he can tell you a lot about it. I would highly recommend talking to him.

As for what I think I would only join if you really want to, not just for the money it promises, cause that's not even really all it's cracked up to be. Girlfriend or not it's a big step that is hard for a lot of people. Talk to people who know about it before you jump in there blindly.

Well Im not going to do anything uless the have it in writing. My brother got screwed because he didnt get anything in writing. I'm not going in there blindly I just wanted to know a little more about it. Thanks for the help guys.

With any Branch, you need to truly think about it. Theres alot of responsiblity. I'm in the Air Force but all branches of the Armed Forces require sacrifice. I did take Army ROTC in college and it was fun but it becomes more demanding as you become closer to a Commision. Actually wished I went through with it. But hey I love the Air Force.

I wouldn't advise the Reserves. Might as well just go Active Duty. Reserves are putting in serious Active Duty time lately. Why go through the drama of being pulled from your everyday life? Go to college, take ROTC and get a feel for it first.

I was really thinking of going through with ROTC through college because you have a chance to go through OCS and become an officer which is a lot better than an NCO. I heard that you had to have PT every day at like 5:30am. I never actually talked to the Air Force but thats what a lot of people told me to join.

Trust me, Being a Officer is better than being an NCO but you got to earn NCO. I just tested to become an NCO and results post in Aug. ROTC was like being in the military. We got Uniforms, did PT, and cleaned, shot, disassemble and reassemble M-16s. ROTC was fun.

I also joined The Pershing Rifles. A Army Frat. Yes I'm in the Air Force and a part of The Pershing Rifles. SCOONEY!

Thanks for the help man. I'll think it through a little more and talk to some more people and get some of this stuff in writing before I do anything, but I'll definately keep the idea open.

I was never in the reserves.. I was in the army. I think you have a misunderstanding of what you are getting into. Send me a private message.

Having it in writing does not matter. You also sign a statement saying that your life is property of the US Army and they can do whatever is needed from you to better the Army as a whole. Do not expect to get everything you have in writing.

Venom,

I got your pm... sorry I didn't reply any earlier...

I might not be the best to advise you on the US army. If you didn't already know, I'm a Korean and am enlisted in the ROK army. I go through slightly different training programs than some...

All I can do is to relay to you what life is like in the Korean army. It's very different from the US army. Many US troops have come to Korean bases and admit that they wouldn't last three days. Not because it's tough, but due to the lack of facilities as well living quarters are beyond most American's imagination.

You guys got it good, you have air conditioning and heating. Koreans dip in rivers when hot, get juniors to pump 100 to warm up the room during winter. 2 guys to a room, two beds. We have 50 people in one room, we sleep on wooden panels. You guys got fresh new M-16's, we've got Korean knock-off's.

THe biggest one?

You guys got flushing toilets, we don't. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/banghead.gif.8606515f668c74f6de0281deb475b6fd.gif

Why? Cause our gov't's military budgets would be smaller than American's budget on pest control.

So my point? I don't think you'll have that harsh a time in the army. I believe the US army slogan puts it best "Be all you can be in the Army". I don't know how many times I've got to repeat that for others to know that the Army will make you a real man. After the army, NOTHING is impossible. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
