Should I go from Analog to Optical?

I have an Alpine PXA-H701 which has multiple optical inputs. I am going to be running my Xbox 360 optical so I was wondering if I should by this converter and run my Ipod optical too. Here is the adapter I'm thinking of getting:

Is this a good idea or a waste of money? Do you all know of any better ones out there? I searched for a while but its the only one I could find. Will I see much of an improvement in sound quality by upgrading to optical? Let me know what you guys think. Thanks!

Optical on an mp3 player? Are all your tracks lossless? If the answer is no, there's nothing to gain by doing this and it only serves to complicate the install and add expense. Even if they are all lossless, you'll not hear a difference.
