Should I get a new Alternator?

I have a stock 80 amp alt and I'm gettin a 1200W (2.300) Lanzar Amp hooked to 2 Comp VR's 12'' subs. I've looked at the new alts from Alterstart and I could get a 135A alt for about $200 or a 150A alt for $230. Which should I go with or will I be able to stay with the stock alt somehow? Also, where should I go to get the alt installed or is it easy to install yourself?

you probably won't be able to get by with the stock one, maybe if you got it rewound. but i prefer to go safe, i'd say you could probably get by with the 135A as long as you're not going to comps.

If thats the Lanzar that only puts out 300 @ 2, theres a good chance you'll be able to get by with an 80.....now how long you will be able to get by with 80, who knows.

And you would definitely be abe to get by with the 135....

Are you using a wiring harness for your hu? Are you using the car's supplied switched 12v supply? If that's the case I bet the radio fuse in the car's fuse block has blown, it usually supplies power to the illumination for the hu. I may be wrong, but it's probably worth checking.

its a lanzar vibe 248... my friend says it would be ok if i got a cap as long as I installed the cap before i had any alt problems? i was just gonna go with the 135A alt if i can get the money. thx 4 your guys' help so far.

Well....your friend is an idiot. A cap is not going to help on an 80A alt. It will hurt your system more than help. Get the 135 and don't even worry about a cap and you'll be fine.

Azn - that is an over-rated amp. It is NOT going to put out 300 x 2 and it certainly won't put out 1000 bridged. I think it would be much more reasonable to expect 200x2 and 600 bridged. With an 80A alt and a decent battery you should be able to run 2 of those amps without any significant power problems, but if you're bound and determined to upgrade, and like to spend money I guess there's no reason not to.

hahha there we go with caps agains.

but seriously don't waste your money on caps, use that money to buy another alt. 135A should be fine but if u don't mind you can get the 150A for $30 more just in case you do more stuff to your car.

Yes, the lanzar Vibe dnot' do dat well. i doubt it's 1000 rms bridge neither, prob peak. it would prob do 500-600. my advice, get the alt n no cap, no cap

nevermind about the vibe248, i instead got a vibe258 for the same price. now a new alternator would probably defintely be necessary at some point, or can i get my stock alternator rewound to be more powerful somehow? how much does it cost to rewind and how powerful can they get it to?

depends on the alternator, and usually it's like $1 an A.
