7200rpm HD, Geforce 8500 or equivalent. 3 gigs of RAM (preferably 4) and the speed of the processor doesnt really make THAT BIG of a difference, get at least 2.0ghz core 2 duo and youll be set. have you tried an alienware computer? ya ya ya i know you pay at least 500 extra for the stupid alien symbol but sometimes they have good deals. this is the ram i would choose too. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820144084

First get a laptop tailored to what your going to do, allot of people get fu@kd into geting way more machine then they need.

I would get xp or 2000 on the machine, also 1200+ bucks is a bit much to spend for something that going to be work 800 bucks in a few months after you get it. Check craigslist, always some overextended guy w/ a new laptop for sale.

i myself almost purchased same laptop but instead got the inspiron 1520 for almost 400 cheaper and with more. 2.4ghz core 2 duo, 7200rpm 160gb, 4gb ddr2 667, 1600x1000 screen with webcam 2mp. the only difference the xps had was, less ram, dedicated graphics which was still only 128mb and thinner design. i couldnt justify 400dollars for just those 2 and less ram with vista.
