Setting the DB

So when you are adjusting the DB from 0,6, or 12 DB's on your amp, what are you actually adjusting. What is mechanically happening when you adjust this knob. Same with the Min. and Max. gain on the amp, what is the mechanically adjusting?

I am a bit confused on this.

Also say I have like a 400 watt RMS amplifier and I set the gain to the bare min. and then I set it to the max. what is the wattage difference the amp is putting out at those to gains? Same with the DB what is the wattage output difference at 0 and 12 DB?
