Setting gain by ear

how will i know if my sub is distorting though, i've never even tried to find out .
can you please stop trying and go just get all your stuff done at a reputable car audio shop, I don't think I've ever seen you post anything with any logical reasoning behind it or relevance. Everytime I read one of your posts I lose a little more of what small amount of faith I have left in humanity.

well, this stuff is confusing sometimes. Usually an amp doesnt have to be set to 3/4 gain to start hitting. But for some **** reason, a new problem arises every week.

Thank you Rashaddd for saying what needed to be said............

Stop tring to get it perfect. Get it how you like it and crash into a tree.

maybe its the box or not good enough electrical to support the ampmaybe because u r running a kenwood that cant give enough power to the subs
at half gain, the sub doesn't even move. I am serious. The box is tuned to 31 hertz.

The kenwood amp is cea rated 900 rms.

Jesus christ, you too king ranch, but I suspect you already know you're a moron.

Where you set your gains has absolutely NOTHING to do with the amp. Gain setting is matching the amplifier's input sensitivity, to the input it's receiving from the headunit, or whatever else you have the RCA's running through in between.

If you have to put your gains all the way up, all the means is you have very low preout voltage, or you're just clipping the fcuk out of the signal in order to make it artificially louder because your amp isn't powerful enough to begin with.

no shite, i know this. If i set my gains to 2.2 volts on my sub amp it can't even be heard even at a 2 ohm load. If i set my gains to the pre out voltage of my head unit, my sub is useless.

i am only running one type r right now until i get my other box finished. But anyway, it is getting a full 900 watts rms at 2 ohms. The type r is only rated at 500 rms, so that should get pretty loud, but for some reason, the **** subwoofer is barely noticable.

the way i understand setting up gains was you use a dmm along with whatever equation it was to get how many watts u wanted going to the amp with the gain.

Don't go based on what your headunit's stated preout voltage is...see for yourself. Or...just turn your gains up until it gets as loud as it can without clipping...If you truly can do that with your gains all the way up...you're probably getting no more than .5v max out of your HU's preouts, despite what it says.

You can use a dmm on your preouts the same way you would on an amp //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif
