in general what do you guys think would be louder 3 12s in a sealed box or two 12s in a ported box with all things being equal with good power and properly made enclosures

3 subs in the sealed = more cone area.

The ported will benefit volume more than one extra sub.

A volume comparison between 4 sealed subs and 2 ported is comparable, but 3 would not be as loud.

Most likely youll be louder or just as loud with 2 ported,plus you will save money by not having to buy a extra woofer.

ok let me change this up a bit becaues the amp i plan to get runs at 1ohm what about 2 subs ported with 800 rms at 2ohm vs 3 subs with 1200 rms at 1.3 ohms

They would be about the same volume.

Excluding price, I would go sealed, because it is more precise, but some like the boomier sound of a ported enclosure.

Factoring in the price of subwoofers, I would go two ported, as you would save the money on one sub, and get the same amount of volume.

the price right now does not matter i have the 3 subs and a box for 3 12s but i have only been using 2 in a ported box cause the amp i have now is only 2ohm stable

ported is a one note wonder, just loud!

Using three in a sealed box will be same volume, approximately, but will be a bit cleaner. Build a ported box for the three, and you'll get an increase.

Ive used sealed and ported and MUCH rather perfer ported.

A low tuned ported box yeilds better SQ and "larger" sounding bass to me
