sealed vs. ported for 12w6v2

The RIGHT ported enclosure won't let you down either. That said most people don't have the space to put these in the right sealed enclosure and most end up in a ported box that is way too small and tuned way too high. A 32hz tuning results in a 3dB peak around 45hz. The sub wants a sub 25hz tuning to play flat. It also wants about 4 cf per driver.
One of these days I am going to take the time to learn to compute appropriate box size on my own. I know that JL's recommended box sizes are different than the ones you just suggested. I am not saying you are right or wrong in this particular case (I just don't know).

However, I am under the impression that many companies underestimate the appropriate size box for their subs. I don't know whether this is for marketing purposes or what. Or perhaps the recommended size represents a compromise of some sort to fit the broadest range of listening tastes.

I recall once reading where Ologyaudio was discussing what size he felt should be used for BA's G5 sub. BA was saying 1^ sealed. Ology was saying that he would recommend puttting it in a much larger enclosure -- perhaps 2.2^ if I remember correctly.

Most manufacturers recommend a compromise box. When it comes to ported boxes they tyipcally recommend a small efficient box. The resulting output enphasizes one particular freq in the 40-50 hz range. The typical person going with the recommended box is usually looking for output over fidelity so it makes sense for the company to spec out a box that gives the average consumer what they want. Once you get beyond just wanting output and really start to care more about quality rather than quantity, you are usually beyond the level of just going with what the manufacturer recommends.

BTW I mis-typed something in the post quoted above. It has been fixed in the original post.

Oh ok. That makes more sense now since the correction //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif. So I guess my question is pointless now. Well not really, what size sealed box would you recommend for these subs. I believe JL recommends 1.25 per sub.

The first box I built for my w 12W6's was built right to JL's specs. I felt the low end was kind of shitty, so built a new box. I built my new box to about 1.4cuft per driver AFTER displacement. It definitely helped the low end, but I still feel it is missing something. I've been thinking about building a ported box and tuning really low to see how it reacts to that. The SQ on these guys are amazing, and I really don't want to lose that.

Im curious as well... I have a 12w6v2 and deciding what kind of box to put it in... I called JL and they told me to put it in a 1.5 cubic foot box with a 30" port with 18.75 sq in port size...I listen to all kinds of music, but mostly rap... Ideas?

These things (12w6v2) can sound extremely well in a smaller sealed enclosure. They don't need nearly as much as some others. I would stay with a sealed box IMO.
