Sealed Or Ported??

hi im a newbie on boxes, just trying to get an idea of what people consider better?? i seen alot of people preferring ported, but does ported make that bigger of a difference? just curious. also, if the sub that you have says on the specification sheet, that it needs to be in a sealed box, is it a bad idea doing otherwise such as ported? thanks a lot!!

this all depends on what your needs/wants are. if you dont have that much space then basically your only option is a small sealed box. if you have lots of space but want a really tight punch from your sub then maybe a ported box tuned real low would be perfect. basically sealed = a flatter response, better sq from the sub, and less space used whereas ported = slightly less sq with increased output and more space needed. hope this helps.

There is no "better". As greenslip mentioned, it all depends on your wants and needs.

In output; yes. But, it really depends on the overall design of the boxes. Sealed boxes generally have flatter response and better transient response....but you can design ported boxes to sound really good and sealed boxes that sound really bad. But the ported boxes generally need to be bigger, and when designing a more "sound quality" oriented ported box you'll loose some of that output advantage.

Not every sub will work well in a ported box. Some subs simply perform best sealed, and perform sub-par when ported.

I feel you should start with sealed and go from there, if you want more output then come back and maybe Jmac can help on a box design
