refoaming a 5.25" speaker questions

I inherited some infinity SL10 speakers *(home audio) that had been store din my dads shed for a few years. Of course in the Hot California sun it pretty much baked the surrounds dry and they disintegrated when I plugged them in.

They are not super expensive speakers or anything but for $20 I can get a refoam kit off ebay (includes directions glue and foams). I have been reading different things on the best way to do this. I do not want to cut out the dust caps or mess with shims etc. Is there a way to re-foam the speaker without removing the dust cap and using shims?

You can recone a speaker without cutting the dustcap but then there's no way to be absolutely sure that the coil is properly spaced and aligned on all sides.

I did a refoam job on a set of really old Advent speakers by using wooden sticks of equal size and thickness and prop the cone up from the bottom to as close of a distance as I can see on all sides then apply the foam surround. It can be done but remember if it's misaligned after the glue dries then you'll have to refoam it again.

I was reading something about playing a certain tone or something to help with alignment but I don't know if this works for speakers. It sounds like I may be better off just buying new speakers then, Its just a shame to throw out these oak cabinets etc.

Don't throw them away if they're nice, you can buy replacement woofers from Parts Express or here for about $20 a piece...
Madisound Store

But then again you can find a pair of JBL N24s or N26s for like $60 on eBay so it might not be worth the time.
I was hoping to use them for surround speakers. The problem with replacing hte woofer is I would then need to replace the crossover and tweeter as well, so I may as well just buy a new pair. Would the 10htz tone method work with a regular speaker or does this only work with subs?
