Rear speaker whine (engine noise), why...?

Car: '95 Eclipse

Head Unit: Pioneer (Older, need a new one)

Front: 6.5" Infinity Kappa Perfect 2-Way Components

Rear: 5.25" Infinity Kappa 2-Way 52.5i

Amp: Rockford Fosgate 400.4

I recently installed rear speakers and they have a whine noise to them based on my engine RPM. The sound is there when the head unit and amp are on and off. It gets louder the higher the engine RPM and is not effected by head unit volume. The front speakers do not have any whining noise at all.

I would like to know if this is being cause by a power wire running beside the rear speaker wire? I though that engine noise would really only be audible if it was being amplified (example: power wire next to RCA cables).

I do not think my power wire is ran along side of the rear speaker wire, but I will double check. I would just like to know what to look for before I start.

the power next to RCA's causing noise is a myth. Most likely its a problem with the HU.

You say the noise is still there when the HU and the amp are off. I call that impossible. I bet your amp isnt turning off. and in that case.. the problem probably lies with the amp.

Alright, tomorrow I am going to unhook the power side to the amp and see if the noise is still there...

than you have a factory amp you forgot to take out.

that's odd, I haven't heard of an engine whine with only one amp, it usually happens with a multiple amp application, try reconnecting your RCA's and if that doesn't work get a RCA noise filter

yea i think you should try unpluggin the amp to officially consider it off. Like john said i would say that is impossible unless it has nothing to do with the stereo. But if you are positive that it is coming from the rear speakers it must be a problem with the HU/Amp ground install or mayb e one of them is defective. If possible try swaping them out one by one and see if the sound goes away. If you use a different hu and different amp and you STILL have alt whine, then i would say its the install.

I do not have a factory amp.

I don't want to get a noise filter.. it just seems like a cover up, I would rather fix the problem.

I will unhook the amp completely today. If it is still there, then I will unhook the HU completely as well... I will post results.

I will take out all my rear panels/seat tomorrow and pull my rear speaker wire out (completely away from the power wire. I will see if this does anything.

Oh and by the way, all my wires are Rockford Fosgate and really high quality.

impossible. you've got to have something else hooked up to them. Like a factory amp. There is no way that the noise could still be there with the amp off.

nope, same type of current, so the noise wouldnt happen. cant induce DC current into DC current.

I installed the system... Nothing else is hooked up. I DO NOT have a factory amp hooked up.

Apparently it isn't impossible. Since my car is doing exactly as I am describing it.

Anybody else?

well if you did it yourself that would be more of a chance that u missed something. Are you sure that you ran everything using new wires and didnt just twist some on to some old ones that were already there? I mean HU and amp off and alt whine? Thats crazy. Like I said before if you say you didnt miss some thing it must have nothing to do with the stereo. I could be something else that sounds like alt whine. Im completly clueless of what it could be hole in exhaust etc but I really have no idea.

do you actually hear something out of the speakers.. or do you hear something from the rear of your car.

gotta be your install man, think about it. No other logical reason.

How can you mess up a speaker install? You run RCA cables from the HU to the amp, and run wire from the amp to the speakers.. A monkey could do it.. You guys make it seem like it is hard. The only hard part is making it look good and not ghetto rigging it. Every wire is brand new. Nothing was reused from the factory system. How can my install have something to do with it? And yes, it is comming from the speakers, nothing else. I was running without rear speakers for a while.. no whine, I installed them and crank the car whine is there for the first time.. I hold my head next to the speaker while sombody revs the car, the whine comes directly from the speakers in the rear.

didnt he say that he disconnected the amp and there was still whine? I dont get it. What else is there to do. Try disconnecting the speakers from the amp? Let me guess still noise. Uhh put those speakers in some containers that reflect all the excessive radiation come from your engine when you rev the engine up.
