Rattling from sub?

Got my RE SX 12, that I traded for, yesterday and decided to give it a test run today, and when I hooked it up a loud rattling noise started as soon as it started to play. The rattling is louder than the bass itself and gets louder when turned up. It sounds like it's coming from inside the cone itself, I know it's not lead slap or anything like that... any ideas what's wrong? is it going to need a Recone? thanks for any help

it's not tinsel slap because I took the sub out of the box and turned it on and could visibly see that the leads were not hitting, and this was only temporary power just to make sure the sub worked. It was only getting 200 watts so the exursion wasn't close to what it's capable of.

People try to sell subs like that all the time, hoping you won't test it out. I've tried to buy 3 different subs off craigslist that had a rattle. When I tested them before buying the sellers just play dumb and say "it never did that before". Always test before you buy or trade. You can still hear the rattle with or without a box. Some subs will still work and test good with an ohm meter and still have a torn voice coil. You just have to know what to look for.

I figured it out... there was a plastic piece under the dust cap that broke off and was bouncing around.... so it should be an easy fix. Is there any specific kind of glue I need to use to glue the dust cap back on?

Hello! I'll chime in! I'm the one that traded him for this sub! He did know upfront before I traded him the conditions of the sub! It works perfectly fine, just has the rattle inside the sub. Once the trunk is closed, you do not hear the rattle....just loud/clean bass...promised! Even in a hatchback you can NOT hear the rattle unless you're at the sub itself....just something loose (internal dustcap imo) and NO recone needed. Anyhow, enjoy!

yep it was the internal dustcap, I just have to reglue it and it's fine and vitveet informed of the rattle before I traded for it so there is no issue there, he's a good guy and made sure I knew the condition
