"SQ" System has no rear component?

I think it comes down to what you want. If you want realistic concert feel then go no rear fill. If you want to feel surrounded in the music, go rear fill. I prefer rear fill because the way I think of it is you can either be in the audience listening to the band onstage, or you can be surrounded in it like your on stage

A proper front stage will immerse you in the sound.

Again, it was only recorded in 2 channels, trying to reproduce it in 4 channels cannot be considered "SQ". That is called personal preference. And, it is wrong. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

yes it was recorded in two channels and yes a proper front stage will immerse you in the sound but the rears will play the same thing as the front if timing is set up correctly so i wouldnt say its a bad thing to have rears, just more work on the set up

rear fill pulls the stereo age back to far. it pulls the channel to the midpoint between the front and rear. your left and right channels should be in front of you, not beside you. the sound picture should be painted in front of you. rear fill along with front fill will bring the stage right in front of your face with stereo seperation that is way too wide... that gives me an idea.. I wonder what a hair of rear fill out of phase would do, might push the stage forward? hmmmm.

No real reason for rear fill if you are going for an SQ system. An adequate component set, properly installed, will provide more than enough sound to fill your vehicle (providing you don't drive an excursion). Rear fill messes with imaging, pulls the stage backward. If you are just going for a nice-sounding daily driver setup, that may be fine, especially if you have passengers a lot.

But if, like me, you're looking for SQ and drive by yourself 99% of the time, rear fill is a waste and is actually detrimental to your goals.

im running a nice set of comps up front, and some cheep coaxil power bass speaker's in the rear... front's are ran off a RF 400x2 and the rear's are just going off the headunit..

i like a lil bit of rear fill..//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

1. Turn fader all the way to front and listen to music for ~30seconds.

2. With eyes closed gradualy turn fader toward rear in very slow increments.

3. The moment you can detect the presence of rear fill, STOP

4. Now you have a solid front stage with the slightest ambience in the rear, and rear passengers will thank you for it. You will still have the strong stereo seperation of the front components, and most amatures sitting up front would not even be aware of the rear fill.

If you think you can properly reproduce stereo in a car, you're cracked. The best you can hope for is a really good illusion. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Even so, having multiple point sources makes that illusion really really really hard, especially if they are behind you.

Just think, if Quadraphonic had flourished instead of dying, we'd all be driving around enjoying the heck out of discrete 4-channel sound. There was even a standard for 4-channel FM. Given that today we have Dolby 5.1 (and more), I'm surprised that there hasn't been a serious attempt made at doing more with the more-than-two-channel formats in CD's.

I love listening to the soundtracks of the DVD's that get played at a friend of mine's place. Why can't CD's be that cool?

the way i see it, is they dont understand because there are holes for speakers to go.

i used to work at circuit city, and i would tell people you will get better sound out of a single set of coaxials and a cheap 2 channel amp, then if you were to buy 2 sets of components and run them from your headunit. they looked at me like i was a r-tard. mind you, comps were like $200 each set, and a pair of coax's can be had for like 80 and a 2 channel amp can be had for like 120. so for the cost of about one comp set, your shit will be as loud and have less distortion.

they dont realize the biggest upgrade they can make to their output and fidelity is the amplifier, speakers dont mean that much, but the second best thing they can do is build on axis enclosures for said speakers, and the third thing they can do is get components in those locations and aim the tweeters correctly.

imo, the amp makes the biggest difference. but i dont drive from the back seat facing the trunk. so i wont put any speakers there either. and as far as i know, my gti has one of the loudest stereos around - not including bass - and i only use midbass and my horns.
