ported or sealed

Joker
so i know i know ported is for spl and sealed for sq but what about a mix of both... i have 2 L5s and i decided i want more sq than spl but i still want some spl... i was told the kickers dont really have much sq to them so i didnt even know if it was worth it... but thats where the experts come in hand... anyone have experience with l5s in ported and sealed enclosures?

i played around with the box calculator and i think this is what size i would want it to be (but i dont know nothing bout enclosure but it looks good i think...)

each sub would get this just like double it to make it for both (i think thats how it goes on that caculater thing?.)

width would be 15" or 17" for each sub so 30" total or 34"

height would be 15"

bottom and top depth of 24"

.75 wood thickness

2" port width

4" port length

witch gives a total frequency of 33.8 on the dot or 31 for the 34" design

does that sound like a good design or am i way off i could do probably either with size

You're over here too, joker? Haha, nice.

And that box looks like it'd do just fine IMO, maybe a bit more port area, but if space is tight, it wouldnt be bad (I would go with the 17"...bit lower tuning and more volume)

Sounds like you want a large, low-tuned ported enclosure.
That's a big '10-4' //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/fyi.gif.9f1f679348da7204ce960cfc74bca8e0.gif

Wait, a single 2" port for two 12" L5s? No. That is a bad design.

Something like this would be much better:

That's about 4 cubes tuned to 30hz and with a 13.5" total internal height or 15" external.

x2, a single 2" port is nor going to be enough area for a box big enough for two 12" L5's. Your going to want around 4 cubes as ImmaComputer said, so your going to be looking for around 40-70 sq inches of port area.

Tuning I would go with like 35 or so, depending on what type of music you listen to.

The way he described the box is what is confusing me. He's building two seperate boxes? Or two chambers? I'm not sure.

What calculator are you using Joker?

kekekeke 2" port for two Kickers

LMFAO

That would be a big sealed box with a hole in it, no Port
I lol'd. Air leaks FTL //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

But yeah he's definitely going to need moar port then 2", or we may be misunderstanding what he is talking about.

We need the OP to come in here and lay down the law!

sorry i didnt explain that good im using the re calculater and what i mean was i basically made a box on there for one sub but going to double that for the 2 so total would be a 4 inch port area a 2 inch for each sub is that a little clearer i mainly listen to rock but at times i love to bump some rap i actually listen to allllll music from classical to jazz to rap rock country... etc lol i just plain like music

well i just took measurements... not looking so good.... so i cant go any wider than 34 " total on the length of the box so im fine there but if i want room for the amp rack im making in my trunk then im going to have to settle with about 20 inches of depth maybe a lil less... but i can raise my height up to about 17"

so since im not really any good at the box making thing ive just been punching in numbers to see what i get and this is the best i could figure up on that

same length 34 " total

heighth of 16 "

20" on the depth

and have dual ports of 1.5 inches each which sould tune it to around 31 hz i believe? or i could make them like 1.75 inches each and that would push them to 34 hz

with the port length of 3 inches

if u want an idea of what im looking at

http://reaudio.com/speaker_box/LPort_Box_Calc.html

thats where i made it and the inputs are

17

16

20

20

.75

1.5-1.75

thanks for the help i know im kinda stupid at this stuff

o and btw what i was thinking in my head when i did this was that i would use that for 1 single sub and then bassically double that for the 2 like combine the 2 boxes to make a dual L port box i guess idk im stupid when it comes to this stuff lol

Ports are described with 3 dimensions, not two. You're confusing us here.... if you say "Two inch port" you are not giving all the details. I assume that means 2" diameter which is not what you're saying. Port height, depth and width are all important as those three variables change tuning.

By making two separate boxes, you are being inefficient with space that you don't have enough of.

ok im not really being clear enuf i guess what im doing is making 1 single box with 2 ports but on re's box calculater it only makes a single L port or as far as i could figure it out so i split what the whole box would be in half on the calculater... that way i would know the size of half of it then just double it for my final prodject so it would be bacsicalle like 34 inches wide 20 inches deep and so on so forth to understand what i mean ud have to actually punch those numbers in on the website i gave and look at it the numbers i gave u would show the size of each side of the box and the port sizes only shows 2 numbers... here is allll the info it gives me to make myself clearer but remember this is for ONE side of the box not 2 serperate boxes one single box but with 2 seperate ports almost like 2 seperate chambers on sealed enclosures:

box width: 17"

box heighth: 16"

box top depth: 20"

box bottom depth: 20"

wood thickeness: .75

square port height: 14.5"

square port width: 1.5 or maybe go 1.75

square port length 1: 17.75"

square port length 2: 3"

total port length 23.75

square port diameter: 5.26

square port area: 21.75

square port volume internal: 516.5625

square port volume displacement: 531.5625

box volume (ft3): 2.099

box volume (in3): 3626.3215

tuned frequency (fb): 31.8

does this make anymore since???

Im pickin up what you're throwin down, joker....would you like me to give you the dimensions of the box I posted for you?...It really is a solid enclosure, especially with the port down the center, giving the center some support without wasting volume with added supports (not that this one's bad)..just let me know
