Hello everyone,
Just signed on here as I have a few questions about my car stereo that I'm planning out right now.
First, here is the car and equipment specs:
2001 Audi S4 w/ Bose Symphony system. Front and rear door openings are 4", rear deck has a 6.5" opening. The 4" openings are a real pain but MB Quart has a 4">5.25" adaptor that hopefully I can find to fit the 5.25" components that I want in there. Many people have done this in their A4/S4s so I know it can easily be done.
Planned system: Here are the pieces of equipment that I already have and will be using.
PPI amps, a 2 ch. and a 4 ch. I cannot remember the model numbers for the life of me, they are grey and 1/2 of the tops are chrome. They're not the chrome series from about 3-4 years ago, these are the middle line ones that came out a year or two after those.
Eclipse 8810.4 sub. My buddy and I are going to tackle a fiberglass enclosure for this, we'll see how that goes.
Alpine 7995 HU. Heard good reviews and feedback from people. Missing the EQ but I'm just looking for better sound, not killer sound. I know the 9815 is coming out, but I got a good deal on this and figured I might as well.
Diamond Audio M651 components for the front. Will be using the MBQ adaptors to fit the drivers and the car has a 1" opening by the door handle for the tweeter.
For one thing, car stereos are not my top priority in the car. My top priority is driving and racing. I don't mind the extra weight in the trunk but I will not do kick panels... I don't think they get in the way that much but I'd rather not have the speakers there nor want the extra cost really. So I'll settle for the door openings at the bottom and the tweeters up top. I know this won't be great for the imaging but it will have to suffice. The 7995 has the time correction but I don't know how well it would work, just have to see.
With that in mind, I'm planning to add some 6.5's in the rear deck for rear fill. Before there's a huge debate about it, I'm really looking for some sound in the back and with the compromise in the imaging in the front already, I think that I should add the rears for some sound. With the 5.25" components up front, I think I'll want more midbass too anyway and the 6.5" rear fills would be nice.
Question, which 6.5" speakers should I get? A set of coax speakers? A regular midrange driver without a tweeter? I'm looking to spend not more than $100-150 on the rear speakers. I don't wanna destroy the soundstage up front by adding highs in the back (coax) so I'm wondering if a set of drivers is good? They'll be less directional without tweeters, but will there be enough vocals / highs? Or should I just get some coaxs so I have more choices with speaker brands / models and say screw it with the whole imaging thing? I don't care about rear passengers that's for sure though... they can drive themselves. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Nevertheless, I'm pretty set on getting rear fill of some sort because I know the imaging up front will not be that great... So with that in mind, any recommendations would be great.
My 2nd question is does anyone know if the 7995 has some sort of mute feature that will accomodate cell phones? While I have the car apart I'm going to integrate my motorola V60 into the car. The only problem I'm seeing right now is that the HU won't mute itself when the phone rings. There is a lead in the phone's car kit to mute a stereo... I just don't know if the HU will do it. The mic and speaker for the phone I have handled.
3rd question: anyone know where I can get the MB Quart 4" to 5.25" adaptors? It seems like I can never get a definite answer... http://www.cartunes.com was where I was pointed to, but could not find them there. Any ideas would be great.
Last thing is if anyone in the Davis / Sacramento area is good at fiberglassing then let me know and if you can help me build a box (in a cubbyhole in the trunk, irregular shapes and curves all over) then that would be great...
TIA
