newbie to audio..need help on subs, amp, etc

well i finally decided that i want to get a system for my car. the only problem is that im new to all of this so i dont know exactley what i need. for now all i really want is one 10. i know i need an amp, and an enclosure, but what other things do i need? im not necessarily looking for the best thing out there but i dont want anything too cheap either. what are some good companies to go with? how much am i looking at for everything im gonna need? any help or opinions would be greatly appreciated. thanks a lot

Because you want only one 10, I'm going to assume you're more of an SQ guy than an SPL guy. You might want to take a look at the Adire Koda (http://www.adireaudio.com). I'm not sure what impedence that Koda is, but some good cheaper brands to look at for amps are: Hifonics, JBL, US Acoustics, Lanzar Opti. If you're really on a budget Profile and Lanzar Vibe series are pretty good for the cash, don't believe everything you hear about Lanzar Vibes being bad amps; overrated slightly? Yes. As crappy as Pyramid/Legacy/Boss? No. The Koda costs about $230.00 shipped, a good amp for that could be found on eBay for under $200.00 easily. You can go down to Home Depot or possibly Lowes to pick up the supplies for box construction, or if you want one made for you check out http://www.woodlawncabinetry.com or http://www.gnomeaudio.com. Oh and for wiring, one of the Scosche kits at Wal-Mart will work just fine for you, or you could order from http://www.knukonceptz.com.

EDIT - Ok, I believe the Koda is 4 ohm SVC, so you'll wanna look for a 2 channel amp that puts out around 250w RMS @ 4 ohms bridged.

Hmmm...ok $400.00 max...if you went with the Koda setup it'd probably cost you slightly more than that for everything. You might take a look at some of the RE drivers, perhaps an RE SE 10. That along with an amp off eBay wouldn't cost too much ($300ish if you shop smart off eBay). A wiring kit from Wal-Mart is like $20, box materials like

if you find a sub you like.. look at the RMS and ohms on the sub.. if its rated at 250 RMS then you need an amp that puts out 250W RMS.. Do not look at PEAK wattage.

SPL = sound pressure level aka how loud it gets

Do not assume that you have to send a sub the power it's rated for in order to acheive maximum output. If everybody did this, there would be alot more blown subs in the world. Adire/RE and possibly JL subs have the thermal power rating given. The mechanical power handling all depends on the box.

That W6v2 alone would cost you $400.00. JL is NOT the way to go if you only have $400.00 to spend. The W0s are pretty good entry level drivers, but I'd look elsewhere. The total RMS output of that amp is actually 300w. The 400w rating is MAX.

Nope no RE dealer anywhere near this state that I know of. Youll have to order direct from the factory on this one. I actually have SEXXX's long story short its their se line thats been modified with xxx cone and suspension.
