Newbie needs sub selection help

what do you guys think of a dc level 3 for this build? I see the 600 watts I was looking for. Would this sound good sealed?

Id say the w6 but that will bring the trolls out... Hertz makes some great sq subs

and you would be right! ... stay away from JL bro.. their a good sub and all, but you can get better for the money.

DC is a good sub... but is more SPL oriented than SQ

I'd see if i could find A JL w6 for a good deal. They are made for small sealed enclosures and 600rms would be perfect.

Just as a reference I found a w7 for 250 today on CL

and a w6 in a box with kicker amp for 300 on CL as well.

So theyre out there. Just search around! But itll be your best bet for your space and amp. IMO

I am no starting to kick around the idea of a 10" since I can fit a nice one in the size I was looking at as mast240 mentioned. What are the thoughs for a 50/50 mix of heavy rock/rap. Heck, what about a 8" like the sundown sa-8??

a single 8 might leave you wanting more... a pair of them, would sound nice... but you'd get alot better use out of that space with a nice, single 10

Your probably right. What about a sundown sa-10 vented at 1.25?? Amp would probably throw 650-675 at it at 2 ohms??

that would sound pretty nice... but will you be able to give it a true 1.25? gotta remember sub displacement, and box displacement here. if you can... it would sound really good

the subs displacement is normally listed by the manufacturer.... but you also want to take into account the wood itself... if you use 3/4" mdf, which is most common, then your actuall goin to lose 1.5" of airspace for each dimension... (i.e if your box is 12" wide... you only have 10.5" of actual airspace, if that makes sense)

So if I can make this work do you think this is the sub for me? As princ stated the jl w6 seems to be exactly what im looking. Is this the best comprable for the situation ($, wattage, space) I am in?

You could get two 12" alpine type r's with a box for 200-250 of off craigslist. They sound really good, and handle the lows pretty good. I had a pair and loved them. You could always get 10" idk tho if they make them. They are 500-650 rms each. MTX sounds good also, a buddy of mine has just one in a 05 forester and it shakes the car like crazy.
