Hi guys, I’m really worried and sad… I think my brand new type x might be blown.

You may or may not know that I recently acquired a 12” alpine type x it cost me 220 shipped from a forum member. It was supposedly brand new, and it looked like it when I got it. I was really worried about blowing it because I didn’t have any sort of warranty on it, so I was “oh so careful” when I first got it I broke it in for about 5 hours with the sub just barely audible then bumped the amp up to about 1/3 or less then I got in about another 4 hours of play time at that level, and now just tonight I turned the amp up more and really started to see what this puppy can do.

With my stereo, volume level 10 is a pretty quite listening level, 15 is moderate, and 19-22 is pretty **** loud. So the sub sounds ok from really low listening levels to about 16-17. Then when I turn it up louder, the sub doesn’t get any louder. It just levels off, almost getting quieter, but adding a horrid buzzing, rattling, or scraping sound. And the sub really doesn’t get too loud. I’m really worried I blew it somehow, but I really don’t feel like it would have been my fault, I still haven’t had anywhere close to 1000RMS go to it, and I had a good break in for it….it could have been blown when I got it for all I know. Like I said, it sounds ok at low - moderate levels, and with most non-rap type music.

What should I do? Is it blown? Could it be anything else?

Well, Id say logically, either your sub is blown or there is something wrong with your amp...

So I mean, get a DMM, see how many ohms each coil is puttin out...

If they are correct (4ohms for DVC 4Ohm, or 2ohms for DVC 2ohm)

If they are see that your amp is on, and functioning properly ( I dont think the amp is the problem, but who knows)

Try pushing in the cone on the sub by hand, with the stereo off. Can you hear the scraping sound?

Anyways, put 2 and 2 together, you've blown it, and probably due to clipping it, or bottoming it out.

Is this thing ported? Is it sealed?

What Size?

But whatever, you blew your sub, cause you dont have a clue, just like everyone else in here that ever blew a sub for the first time.

DMM (Digital Multi-meter, get em anywhere) BUY ONE. IT IS YOUR BESTEST FRIEND IN CAR AUDIO -- Sorta.

As for buying it 2nd hand from a person, and not a store... It is quite possible that THAT person was a retard, and blew it off the get go - Slapped it back in the box, and sold it to the first person that came around. $200 for that sub is cheap -- I dont beleive that anyone in thier right mind that had a BRAND NEW sub, would sell it for almost 1/2 price.

Buy equipment after you've seen it in action, and if you cant, buy from a COMPANY with a reputable reputation. PERIOD. Anyone that buys anything used is ALWAYS taking the chance of being ripped off. I dont care what anyone says.

YOU'VE BEEN REPREMANDED -- NOW WISE UP, DO IT RIGHT, DO IT RIGHT THE FIRST TIME SO THAT THIS KINDA CRAP DOESNT HAPPEN.

why accuse him of blowing it right away?

If you were actually trying to break it in, 5 hours wouldn't have been enough...

But anyway, what kind of box is it? What kind of car do you have? What kind of amp is running it...

i do have a clue..ive been around the block a few times with car audio, its not like this is my first sub.

And if you had a clue you would know that you could buy a 12" type x on ebay NEW for about 250, so a new one from a private party for 200 isnt that crazy of a notion. aparently you didnt even pay attention when you read the post, because this sub wasnt used. It was supposedly new when i bought it, but im looking into that right now.

I have a DMM i will check the impedence today.

it is in a small sealed box..about .9 cubes, i have it in my 92 taurus SHO running off of my visonik v900hc left from my 4 tens project. I know this amp is a little too powerful ( it puts out about 1500rms @ 2ohms @ 17v, so it seems like that would bring it almost down to 1000rms at 12v, but i never turned the amp up past 1/2 anyway.

i have been around here for along time doing car audio, i didnt just fall off the turnip truck, you on the other hand...i dont know where you came from.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif

thanks for your input though..you could have worded it a little more respectfully.
