New SQ Build Help

So I want to completely revamp my whole audio system one piece at a time. Right now I want to do the subwoofer side and get some nice SQ subwoofers and an amp to compliment them. I was thinking about getting some Infinity Kappas 10's and then maybe a Rockford Fosgate P700-1BD or Rockford Fosgate R750-1D or NVX Audio JAD1200.1 for them. I am not that good at pairing the right stuff so I'd like some help. Maybe you could recommend better subs or better amps or both? The subs will be going in a sealed enclosure that is around 1.0 cubic feet, maybe less.

I think you could do better than your listed equipment, especially if SQ/SQL is what you're after.

What is your budget and what are you installing them in?

Do you have to stick with that small of a sealed enclosure?

Dayton HO's love the little sealed boxes, if so....

Oh, BTW, the Infinity 1060W is a very underrated little sub for SQ on the cheap

I love the Kappa Perfect 10's! Have had a couple pairs. One of the few subs I kind of miss. Though they didn't really shine till I put them in a ported box.... ID subs will do well sealed up. Is that 1 cube for both subs?

Well I was planning on around $400 for the substage (including amp) maybe even 500 if convinced and about $150 for the front and back speakers per pair (no amp). I'm not necessarily going for high end SQ. I just want something that will sound better than most peoples car audio. I'll have to look up these ID subs.

I have an '08 Ram quad cab that I am putting an SQL system into, and can offer you this tidbit of info:

nothing I found in the way of subs were gonna give me the performance/output I wanted if I put them under the rear seats in even a 1/2" MDF enclosure. (I was looking at only around 0.7 cubes with the MDF, or even with the prefab composite boxes for my 12's)

Granted, I understand you're planning on going with 10's, not 12's, but your remark about the volume you have available leads me to believe that you may be planning to build your enclosure using 3/4" MDF, which puts still puts you in the same position I was in.

The only subs that I was able to give reasonable consideration to---- before I decided to do custom fiberglass enclosures---- were the Dayton HO's and the Skar's, and even 0.7cubes seemed a bit "iffy" to me for these.

You may be able to find something that will work, but I would advise you take enough time to thoroughly research all your options before you "settle" on something that you may not be happy with when it is all said-and-done...

Regarding your list of amplifiers, as long as it's a well made amplifier providing adequate power, when you put it on subs it doesn't mean a hoot for the sound quality. My preference would be to go with the brand that designs their own amplifiers, which is RF over NVX. If you used a vented enclosure then you need to make sure the amplifier has a subsonic filter. Another thing about choosing an amp for subs is the power ratings don't need to match up. Typically you're safe going with extra power, but extra power comes at the cost of extra heat in the voice coils and extra current draw.

If SQ is your goal, your budget for amps vs speakers is backwards. SQ starts with the front speakers and ends with subs. Sub SQ is a misnomer. Sub enclosure and install affects SQ more than sub/amp choice. An underhung sub is an "SQ" sub.

The goal with SQ is for the sub to disappear and for bass to be in the soundstage. That requires good midbass performance from speakers and moderate sub levels.

Non-amped speakers offer no SQ possibilities. HU distortion destroys any chance.

Your goal, based on your plans, is for a below average system.

Yeah Image Dynamics are kind of expensive as well... If you want true SQ I might be getting rid of my Focals soon. They're the 13" Polyglass V1's. I LOVE them! When I do decide to sell em' I'll probably kick myself in the a$$. Just wanna try something different. You'd need more room though....

^^ If you going to selling those focal subs what other subs are you planning on getting to replace them?

I think focal makes some of best SQ subs out there, it will be hard to find something that has low distortion,clean midbass,tight sub bass with the boominess ,& yes they can hit hard in the right box.

The Kappa Perfect 10.1 will fit in a .6 cu ft sealed enclosure.They sound amazing but like alot of watts.The 350 max rms rating is a bit low,one of the better SQ subs made.I do agree with the guy above who likes the Infinity 1060,nothing bad to say about them either.
