New Member seeking advice

Ok, so I'd like to update on my sub "needs". Today I got my buddy's Konaki 12 all worked out finally. Its sitting in a 1.4cu.ft slot ported box tuned at 44hz, powered with 450W RMS @ 2 ohm. THE THING ABSOLUTELY POUNDS!!

With that being said, I no longer care about outperforming him and his setup. After riding around in his car all day, the only thing it gave me was a headache and a better understanding of what I want.

I want MUCH better SQ than his puts out, and definately a box tuned lower. Sure, the SPL is cool to show off every now and then, and we were told that it was rattling the dishes in his kitchen with the car out in the road.

But I drive about 80 miles a day in my car, and I need something that sounds much better. So with that being said, do yall still think a 15" cvx would be my best bet? Or should I look at a different brand sub, or a different size cvx in order to achieve more SQ? Remember, box size isn't a restriction, and I have 900RMS to give it.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

While Im a fan of Stillwater Designs, and Kicker specifically, yes Id expand my horizons and look at other brands. Especially since you are now leaning towards SQ.

Yeah, your buddy's 12 pounds due to the 44hz tuning (mated well with his car's transfer function). Makes it loud, but like you said, also makes it a headache machine. Very little timbre in his bass Im sure, very little articulation between frequencies and notes. 80 miles a day listening to this system? hell yes go for SQ/SQL. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

If you buy a nice sub like a Magnum, Rlp, Brahma, etc, install it a good sounding setup, and let them listen to how much better it sounds.... Im confident it will be your buddy's that want to copy your system in the future, not the other way around. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

nice pics man, check out my car int/ext thread..

your gonna fire sub/port thru the backseat correct.. I still stand by AQ sd2.5's.. 10's or 12's either one.. or DD 1500's.. the aq's remind me of a blend between the DD 1500 & 2500 series.. definately impressed with those for the price..

my boy had 2 DD 1512's doing 143db legal.. im very impressed for under $300 of woofer.. now he has 4 dd 1512's doing upper 140's its stupid loud..

So what size should I use? 1-12"? 1-15"? 2-10"?
And should I do sealed instead of ported for better SQ, or could I just tune to like 32hz get good SQL?
i got 1 12" tuned to 32 htz 2.25 cubes, i wouldn't say it's sq at all but it hits a wide range real nice... i guess it'd be called sql. i listen to hip hop mostly but when i put in some primus or something it sounds great for that to. don't know if that helped but it's my .02 cents...

dude get you an mj-18 for a little over 100$ and you will have awesome sq, and deep loud bass, i just got mine and threw about 900 watts to it and it pounds harder than any setup iv had (it is an 18 in.) and it sounds amazing on fast punchy bass lines. oh and there is a review on here right now from jman about it if you wanna check that out.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. Does that mj-18 have a pretty decent range in a sealed enclosure? The large size makes me scared that it will only be good for the really low frequencies... Am I wrong for thinking this?

I've been looking at the Phoenix Gold RSD12's. They would match the rest of my system, and I've read some pretty good things about them when it comes to SQ. I'm thinking maybe 2 of them in a sealed box, 1.8cu.ft a piece, with 450RMS a piece...

Anyone have any comments on them?

im currently runnin mine in a 3.1 cu ft box and it nails the lows very well and does great on the higher bass as well. you will be amazed at how acurate this sub is and with the 900 watts you have to push it with will be LOUD. i have a profile AP2000 that will put out around 900 rms and it sounds amazing and when i want to crank it it absolutely POUNDS!!!!!

heres the link for it

if you end up going with the mj you will probably be alot louder than those other guys and sound MUCH better too, but these other guys have listed some good things too so in the end its up to you and what you are happy with.

Thanks for the offer and all the advice man, but after further (extensive) research, I ordered 2 Phoenix Gold RSD12's. From what I've read, they have awesome SQ, they can take a lot of abuse, and they are very reasonably priced. And on top of all that, they will match my front components and 6x9's...

Today I started on the box. 1.8cu.ft per sub sealed is what I built, because that was said to be the best for the subs. It will be done by tomorrow. For whoever wants to see it, here's a couple cell phone pics of the progress. I used 3/4MDF, TiteBond 2 wood glue, and clear silicone. Its not the first box I've built, but so far its coming out really good. I'll post some finished pics tomorrow.
