Need a sub ~$200 for home stereo

Alright, I'm thinking the Dayton Audio RSS315HF-4 looks pretty good. Only thing I wonder about is the RMS rating of 400 watts. Is this a conservative rating? Or should I really not give it over 400 watts?[/QUOTE]

I think that's about right. WinISD predicts you will run out of xmax excursion with 400watts of power in a sealed box. Perhaps a ported box would control excursion better. However, one thing about these is that they have pretty good sensitivity, so they can get louder than others on the same amount of power. I

I plan to have it in a ported box tuned pretty low. Not sure how low though. Any suggestions?

That's really interesting. Except I am putting this system into a dorm room. The floor is tile, walls are concrete brick, and ceiling is plaster or something.

15-20hz a lot of explosions and whatnot get ridiculously low...

You really don't need a high power system then, a single 15 on 400w would be WAY overkill for a dorm.

Wouldnt it not be very good for music at 15-20?

That's the point

It's not that it 'wouldn't be good', it's just the response curve would peak much lower so the output would be less. However if you're going to use it primarily for music then tune higher, go 25-30hz, but I'm biased because I love the lows....

I think 23 or 24 would be good. The box in my car is at 33hz and it hits everything pretty well. Would lower tuning be better for the kick drum in rock songs? Would it be punchier?

I'd check into TC Sounds subwoofers. If you can find a TC Sounds TC1000, I'd go for that. Has one of the best underhung motors; TC2+ Motor.

500wrms power handling, they get low, reach their full potential off of minimal power and are great Sound Quality drivers. They are widely used for home theater applications. TC Sounds has made subwoofers for Sound Splinter, Eclipse and Audiopulse. There are numerous people on hometheatershack.com that use the TC1000

It's actually not underhung but a great driver nonetheless!

Take a look at the 'Bash' plate amps on parts express. I've been running a 400 wrms kenwood kfc shitter off a 300 rms bash plate amp for a couple years now and that thing really surprises me when ever I'm home alone and turn it up haha.

I know they make a bash 500 rms plate too.

Also try and stick with a HT sub or at least a high sensitivity mobile audio sub as those typically work better in HT situations I feel.

But yea man for a dorm room.... anything over a passive 8" off a 50 watt per channel sony HT in a box is gonna be plenty loud haha.

there was an mb quart rwe 15 for sale on here not to long ago. that would be a great option, very efficient and gets low if i remember correctly the freq response is 16-300 or close. i have the pwe version that is rated for 800wrms and it is thriving on about 250wrms, it vibrates my house. it is designed for a sealed box, but they do get lowwww.
