Need a 500 rms Amp. Cant decide between 4...

so you have 2 type r 12s and only wanna put 500w on the pair?
One right now but going to have 2...

Assuming by that question that I dont know exactly what it means by the whole output/input thing. Is it set to where if an amp is bridged to be mono the output power being 880 would mean 880 per speaker or is that output split between the 2? If thats the case then whats the point of bridging the 2 channels when you get 440 per speaker regardless?

Gotta admit its a little confusing.

yah... that PA amp is probably going to put out 600wRMS, and that isn't near enough for 2 Type R's. 500 (per woofer) is a minimum for them to come alive, and you can go up to 800+ (each).

Consider AQ1200d, AP1500.1d, bxi1610d, and others in the same power range.

You sure your not thinking of a 15 inch type r and not a 12 inch type r?

From this site:

http://www.nextag.com/Alpine-Type-R-SWR-68724322/prices-html

The Alpine Type-R SWR-1242D subwoofer features dual 4-ohm coils, an RMS output power range of 200-500 watts.
Did a bit of digging and every site says eathier 500 watts rms, 200-500, or 300-500. None mention anything about going over 500. It has a 1500 watt peak but not rms...

You all are confusing the crap outta me lol. Several sites vs experienced people. You are absolutely sure your not thinking of the 15 inch type rs? The 15" Model # is SWR-1542D and the 12s are SWR-1242D.

one type r 12 is good for 500w rms, you said you have two (or will have) so as a pair they're good for 1000 rms, obviously.

They will run fine with anything from 250-500 each. Many claim 600+ gets the best results, but by no means do you HAVE to have that much power.

The LT1920 ratings:

370w rms per channel with each channel driving 4 ohms.

440w rms per channel with each channel drving 2 ohms.

If the amp is bridged it will deliver 880w into 4 ohms or 740w into 8 ohms.

The amp is a little bit over-rated, but it should do close to 800w into 4 ohms, probably 600-700 into 8.

(If it doesn't do around 800w into 4 ohms it is possibly the most over-fused amp ever produced.)

As for YOUR application:

ONE DVC 4 can be wired for 2 or 8 ohms.

If you're running ONE 12" dvc 4 Type R temporarily I would recommend wiring it for 8 ohms and bridging the amp. Yes you will have the ability to drive the sub with 600-700w. Just keep the gain on the low side and it will run fine.

Then, when you add the second sub you will have wiring options of 1, 4 or 16 ohms. 4 being the obvious choice. At that point you'll rewire the subs for 4 ohms getting around 400w per sub (with multiple subs the power from the amp is divided between/among them).

Ok that actually helped me understand it a bit more. Ty for that.

Sorry for ragging on the PA amp earlier. Made a calculation error. Should do 750-850 @ 4 bridged mono.

This will push the Type R's well enough, especially if you aren't planning on abusing them like some of the guys on here. Again, sorry for coming across as a jerk.

Meh the PA amp is gone anyway. The guy already sold it to someone else.

Will probably just end up getting that one if I cant find a decent used one. I know Boss is a pretty good brand...well atleast im confident it is. 4 channels at 250 rms each+600 max. Just bridge and turn it into 2 channels with 500 rms each with 1200 peak per sub. Goes for about $200 on ebay...$50 more than I wanted to spend on a amp but meh...atleast I can be sure the subs will sound good.

Ignore max, ignore peak, and in general, ignore about any rating on the budget brand amps because they inflate them so bad. They force you to look at the fuses and try to guesstimate about how much power they'll give you. And that guesstimation is significantly more accurate than their ratings.

Boss is a step down from Power Acoustik IMO.

And being a 4 ch amp throws your 2 ohm 4 ohm stuff I tried to explain to you with the 2 ch PA out the door.

2nd of all, that Boss has 2x35A fuses for a total of 70A. That would indicate somewhere around 700w at minimum impedance, but since you will have a pair of dvc 4's you can't GET minimum impedance so you're stuck with running each sub at 8 ohms on a bridged pair of channels, so about 250w per sub.

Not the end of the world, but you can do better. Especially now that you're willing to spend $200.

You can wire one sub at 2 ohms for about 600w, and when you get the 2nd one you can drop it down to 1 ohm for about 500w each. It's one of the more popular budget amps and since it's a class D it won't be as hard on your electrical system as the Boss and PA.

Wow the whole sound system thing is a bit more complicated than I originally thought. But o well bet most people start out wondering wtf?

But ok depending on what this one guy on craigslist has and what his prices are I will go ahead and get me one of the Hifonics. Apparently has several amps. Ty for the help.

~~~~~~
Highest rated amp he has is a Kole XP2-2000. Doubt its any good but he is asking $100 on it.
