Same here man..When I asked my parents if they were going to buy me a car my dad said he would drive me to a job interview and buy me a $50 bike to ride to work if i got the job. I bought my truck when I turned 15 with all my lawn mowing money from an entire summer. Parents paid 3 months of insurance every year until now.
Other than that, gas, insurance, tags, and taxes have all been on me. Title has been in my name since I was 16.
I can guarantee that even if he pays for his own insurance, his parents will keep him on their coverage, which keeps it BEYOND low of what you pay yourself. After 2 1/2 years of perfect driving with no tickets or accidents, AND being military, i'm still paying 80 a month for rock bottom liability.
but i've learned a lot about hard work because of this. my kids will do the same.
I bought my first car with all of the money I had saved from doing odd jobs in the summer time. I drove that piece for 6 years and still own it to this date. Still have yet to replace anything major on it. It's been a hell of a reliable car and gets around 30mpg on the highway. I don't know how many people I have known & went to school with that had vehicles bought for them and barely made it through high school with a running vehicle. You end up appreciating your property a lot more when you put your own money into it. A lot of those guys are on their 3rd/4th vehicles now and I just got my 2nd earlier last year.
With 3 vehicles, the 02 rsx type S, 03 dodge intrepid and 93 dodge spirit.. I am paying $182/mo for full coverage on the rsx & intrepid & liability on the spirit. My deductibles are set pretty low @ 200$ too. That comes with 6 years accident free driving, no citations in 3 years, being in the military ect.
I'm happy my parents didn't buy me a vehicle and my kids will be raised the same way.
