messed up sub for free... diagnosis of problem?

my buddy gave me a "blown" CVX for free. i havnt tested the coils with a DMM yet but threw a 7.2V battery on each coil and they popped up fine with no resistance or scratching. when i connect it to a 500w amp and play music, itll sound just fine until it exceeds about a centimeter of excursion, then it sounds "boingy" hah. i know 500 watts isnt much but i wouldnt expect it to sound that way after testing many other subs that sounded fine.

ill test the coils later to make sure they read near 4 ohms but has anyone else experienced this or know what it is off the top of their head? thanks

I had a 12" w3 awhile back for my first sub, never clipped it or anything like that. The same thing happened to me. When you tap on the cone, it makes a boingy sound just like that... you can also hear it at low volumes. Made a few threads on here and never got to what actually happened unfortunately
