Making old box fit in new car

Ok so here's my problem. I had a 4 fifteens box walled in a chevy beretta, I recently bought a mistubishi montero and took the box out the beretta and tried to put it in the montero. The box was too big so me and my dad took 4 inches off the width of the box and the port. We got the box to fit but it still sits too high and I can't see out of my rear view mirror. Keep in mind it was a huge box and it had weak subs in it (planet audio z15) on 2250 watts. The box is 40inches wide, 33inches long, 22inches tall. I was wondering if I can take 4 inches off the height of the box so it wouldn't stand so tall. Keep in mind this box was built years ago for the beretta and the subs are weak and I don't think they need all that space. I'm just trying to re use the box and 4 subs I have because I'm trying to avoid spending too much money. I'm sure it wouldn't hurt too bad to take a few inches off considering it's an old school mdf box lol. Any advice would be appreciated, thanks. I'm just trying to get the best out of what I have.
