Looking for a dirt bike

I've wanted a dirt bike for a while now and after looking through some of the threads about bikes, I'm really serious about getting one. The thing is I've never ridden one before so I dont know where to start. I have a 4 wheeler and love riding it but I'm ready for something a little different. What do you guys think would be a good bike to start out on?

if you just want a play bike, stay away from a mx,r(rm, yz, kx, cr) they are fun, but expensive to maintain, i prfer the new 4 strokes..easier to go fast, but then again 2 smokers do have a big grin factor. How big are you? To bad you didnt post few months earlier, i sold all our bikes, since we quit racing, would have made you a deal

I probably wont be doing any racing besides the occasional wanting to go a little fast. But mostly trail riding or dirt road stuff. It doesnt have to be street legal, but I may ride it up and down my street. My neighbor has a little pocket bike he rides around on the street and I sometimes ride my 4 wheeler around our street, so i dont really get bothered by my neighbors.

Also, i'm 6' and about 150-160lbs. (yeah, i know im a skinny f***)

As stated above, there are a ton of factors to concider when you're buying a bike. For a person just learning to ride, I would recomend a XR 250 4-Stroke. 4-Strokes are easy to get used to clutching, and have a good low end for slow riding when you have to be careful.

But send us some more information and we'll talk. LOL.

A small 4 stroke would be a great bike for you then. I would say a 250 or a 400 if you feel brave. LOL. Sit on a few and see how they feel to you. I like the hondas myself.

I would stay away from the 4 stroke race bikes (450f etc) since they are a little more directed to the top end power band of moto cross.

you could look into the yamaha wr-250, i do a lot of trail riding and that what i ride. I just have the gyt-r exhaust on it and it's pretty fast. It's a trail bike so it has lights, electric start which is great to have and an odometer.

I'd start with a four stroke if it's your first bike, it can be hard getting used to the powerband on a two stroke and how they behave

I'm gonna try and look for used bikes for sale. I dont want to spend too much money on my first bike.

Edit: I'm pretty new to the bike scene, so could someone kind of compare 2 strokes vs. 4 strokes?

Xr250

Don't get a 250f or 250 2 smoke unless you want to have the cops called on you since it doesn't look like you will be on the track. And don't ride it on the street; the idiots that do give mxers a bad rep.

And dont get a 250f or 450 unless you want to change the oil and clean the air filter every 5 hours.

i learned on a 2 stroke. best bikes IMO, hell of a powerband, and fast as greased lightning. but if your not going to race and live in town a smaller 4 stroke would be the best thing for you. when i raced a few years ago i had the best luck with Kawasaki's so i would have to recommend them.
