Limited speaker choices, need recommendations

Hey guys,

A little background: I've had a pair of DEI comps in my car for awhile, but the tweeters never worked(long story). I threw some crappy tweets in just to have some high end up front, but it is not a great solution. Now my right speaker is cutting in and out and appears to be dying.

After some exchanges from xmas gifts I've edded up with some credit at Best Buy and I'm thinking of using it to replace my front speakers. Best Buy pretty much sucks for selection, so I was hoping you guys could tell me what the best option would be of the few options I have. I've got it narrowed down to:

Kenwood - 6-1/2" KFC-P605IE (comps)

Kenwood - 6-1/2" KFC-1679ie (2 way)

Pioneer - 6-1/2" TS-A1680R (4 way, 3 way is also avail)

Rockford - 6-1/2" T162C (2 way)

They also have some Sony's, but I doubt they're any good. Obviously I need to run in and listen to some of these, but the environment there is kind of a drag so if you guys have recommendations, either general or specific, I'd really appreciate it.

STAY AWAY FROM THE SONYS. Yes, back away slowly. I have the misfortune of owning a pair right now. The woofer that handles midbass doesn't like it's job, and retaliates by doing it not even half assed. They might make nice 6.5" tweeters, though.

Gonna say go with what sounds the best to you. Personally, I'd choose between the Kenwood and the Pioneers, and just leave everything else out the equation.

Any other opinions on these options? I'm leaning towards the Kenwood comps just because they are comps. If one of the coaxs would be better than these comps, please let me know!

I wish BB would at least carry Infinity, JBL, Polk, or Alpine!

I thought the Kenwood components in my fathers Trooper sounded pretty good... even of from Alpine HU power.

Hey guys,

I'm trying to talk someone into buying my gift credit from me so I have cash. This should allow me to get a better deal and hopefully better speakers. So with that in mind, could you guys make some recommendations for 6.5" comps in the $100-$150 range(pair). I've dug through a bunch of the posts on here, but it seems most people have a bigger budget than I have at this point.

Let me give an idea of what I'd ideally like. I'm looking much more for sound quality and clarity rather than booming bass or cutting highs. I mostly listen to jazz, funk, old r&b, etc. I have a sub already, but I'd like nicely defined mid-bass.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

That was about my budget. There are a lot of brands in the range in the thread I started. Depending on how long you're willing to wait, you could get Oz Vectors for about $115 in March. You could go a little over budget and get Rainbow's entry level comps.

What series of DEI did you have? Do you like them? I have the opportunity to buy a pair of the DEI Pro 2055s very cheap.

Thanks guys. My DEI's are a few years old, I don't remember the model but I think they were the Studio line. They may have been the first set they put out. They are okay, but the tweets never really worked. They put out VERY little level. So little you can't hear them unless you put your ear up to them. I played with them a lot to get them to work, but they're just a bum set. I bought some cheap tweeters to replace them and haven't had any problems with them (aside from the harsh sound of cheap tweeters). I find the woofer to be a little harsh in the mid range and they don't have much in the way of bass. My wife's stock Honda Accord speakers have better bass than my car when I turn the sub off.

Ebay has a lot of cheap Infinity Reference comps. Like $90 BuyItNow. That seems like a pretty sweet deal. Do you guys like these? I'm going to check out some stores in my area and see how the cheap MB Quarts sound. There is a CDT dealer about 40 miles from me. If I can make it down there I'll check those out too, though they might be pushing my budget.

see if best buy can order you the pioneer revv series components( it is their top of the line speaker). they should be able to being a pioneer dealer.

if your not going to be able to amp the comps then go with some coaxials. but if you plan on amping them later get some comps. i might be able to get you some orion P6.2 for 150. LMK

ok..the best speakers are ez-est to pick from kicker/cerwin vega/polk......

but jvc/audiobahn has sum very nice ones but you haveto know what to look for....maybe sony/kenwood too...

infinity is nice but unless you go all infinity it doesnt sound right.......

$$150!.......i think all my mids/highs cost aboout that...thats alot of speakers i have..

lanzer speakers good too.......

look you dont want high cost speakers due to theft and youll want to try something else soon..if you buy those $150 speakers i hope you love them youll be looking at them 4 yrs at least...lol

I don't agree with much of that. You could probably go some place and listen to some alpine type R's. Those are pretty cheap on ebay. You can probably get some CDT's or DLS sets for under $150. Those would be my suggestions.
