LEDs that pulse to the subs

i really really want to buy some LED strips and wire them so they will pulse to the beat of my subs. How exactly do i do that? would i hook them right up to the output on my amp?

I helped my friend do this once. He has some led strips from GM. We used a crappy old 2ch amp and split the RCAs from the subwoofer amp to the LED amp. Then simply hooked the lights to the amp just like speakers, the gain controlled the intensity. It was pretty annoying...

Some of the LED tube kits have microphones built into the control pads that make the light kits beat to the music......
