Is it ok to turn the Gain all the way up, if sub is underpowered ???

I got ZX750.1 and im pushing SW9122.

The thing is that SW9122 is rated 750RMS but seems like it can take a lot more.

My amp is rated 900RMS @ 2ohms.

Well before i used bass boost and all the controls on my HU to have more bass till i found thing like BASS boost on the amp or some EQ settings on HU can result in sound distortion.

So I reduced Bass Boost on the amp to 0 (it did in fact give me cleaner bass) and turned off all EQ on my HU to avoid any distortion.

Now the problem is whithout those settings and with gain turned 70% up my Sub is barely breathing.

My question is if Eclipse SW9122 are in fact underrated and can take more than 750-900watts, can I turn the gain all the way up or at least to 90%?

I dont EVER turn the gain completely up because you WILL clip that sub. Turn it up around 3/4 or so, and go back to your HU. Is your subwoofer setting turned up?

What kind of head unit do you have? If you have to turn off the EQ from your head unit to avoid distortion, I would say you have a defective HU or you did not set you EQ up properly. I would not turn gain all the way up, just my .02.

what head unit do you have? nothing wrong with having the eq turn on. are you using original cd's or downloaded music? If your amp is not clipping theres nothing wrong with having the gain turned up, however answer those questions so we can determine if its a low pre out or something else.

Or you could set ur gains the right way with a DMM or O Scope?

My HU is Pioneer DEH-5800MP.

its not defective. My Zx750 has 7 increments of Gain including 0 (minimum) and 11 (maximum). Right now its on 5th increment (which is like 70% up) and with all EQs off my sub is barely breathing BUT if i mess with my HU i do get some decent bass.

so its better to levet it 70-75% and just mess with HU right?

Well the problem here is that the gain alone doesn't actually determine how much power the amp is producing. Having the gain turned up to 50% doesn't mean that your amp is only capable of producing 50% of its RMS value. It is strictly an input sensitivity device that allows you to match your amps input sensitivity to your pre-outs input voltage. So with the proper input voltage, you could still get full RMS power from the amp with the gain only turned up to 25%. This thread has more info:

LOL - well, it would if CAF wasn't down again. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif

Subwoofer setting is on. Now if guys had pioneer HU id be able to explain what options it has.

For example it has option SLA (source level adjustment) if u increase it u get more bass but it distorts a lil bit

The sub cutt of frequency is set 80.

HPF high pass filter is at 80.

i never set my gain to max but it was for like 3 days on the 6th increment (total 7)

and it wasnt clipping and was loud enough. I just turned it down to 5th - coz i don wanna fry anything.

Do you have a sub level on the HU? You might have to turn that up first. Basically you should setup your headunit the way you want it first THEN set gain.

Generally EQ's should be flat and bass boost off when you do this. But you may have to have your sub level up. On my kenwood I had to have it at 9-11 to get the wattage I wanted.
