I think im confused on the type of sub i want. . . SQ vs SPL

Its for his taste, It could be flat but it sounds like he likes the upper peak with a tiny bit of lows. People around my area all run Kicker. Its kicker central here in So-Cal and we got a lot of people that dont like lows like the op and they have box setups like i mentioned. Literally demoed over 20 L7 setups of all shapes and sizes. You can do your 5 cubic feet low tuned flat response box and be okay with it but IRL It wont sound anywhere the op would like it. Some people like the upper end peak as he already clearly stated how he liked the smaller box's sound signature.
What's "low" and "high"? That's pretty subjective. The way I read it, his problem was that it only plays one note loud. Look at that prefab box, you really figure that's playing 30hz?

First of all, OP, building a box with round port that you can test tunings is a very good idea. Also you might want to get some test tones so you can more accurately explain what frequencies are doing what for you.

Exact larger boxAmazon.com : Atrend 12KSV 12" Single Vented Square Subwoofer Enclosure for Kicker L5 and L7 Subwoofers : Electronics

Smaller box

Amazon.com: Atrend 12SQKV 12in Single Vented Square Box Enclosure Kicker L5/L7 Specific: Electronics

When I received the larger box it had SPL on the enclosure

The smaller box came with the install and I bought the larger box
Thats your problem. Those boxes are designed by a chimp. Compared to a properly made box those are garbage with specs pulled out of their @ss. Never ever buy anything from ebay or amazon. Thats the worst thing you can do to your sound system. Absolutely horrible.

Yeah, I know now. You live, you learn

If you're willing to spend on a w7 and are looking for sound quality slightly over output you could save if you go with a w6v3. I had a L7 and a w7 and bunch of others through out the years. I now own 2 w6v3's , a 12" and a 10". I agree with everyone though , the box has a whole lot to do with the sound. Good luck .
