I think im confused on the type of sub i want. . . SQ vs SPL

Read #1 , to get to the point of my question.

Read #2 , to hear about my day, regarding my overall question.

1) I want a hard hitting sub that doenst 'only' play at a 30hz frequency. Please name a sub or subs, that will play at a full(er) range (i do want to hear the song, not just the extreme highs and extreme lows with nothing in between)

2) Awwwwww, you do care about my day //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif Ok, SO..... I ordered a "custom" box for my 12' L7 kicker. I didnt realize until it was all set up that it was an "SPL" type of enclousre. So, i change out my sub and hook it all back up just to find out that my music doenst sound right. Alot of frequencies seem to be missing. I did hear alot of lower bass that i didnt hear before, but the 'midrange' was all but missing. So, long story short, my audio guy said that its because the enclosure was made to hit a certain frequency. It had a much larger port and the box was alot bigger. I then talked to him about me wanting to get Sundown Nightshades and he quickly said that with subs like that, they will primarily hit a very low frequency, but thats about it. He went on to say that my music wont sound "good" if i have an SPL setup. So, i want a hard hitting sub that will also sound good. I hope ive explained myself well enough. I want to hear the full range of music, not just the extreme lows and extreme highs.

Thanks for your time as usual //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

i forgot to mention my audio guy said that the JL W7's were a "VERY" good sub for SQ. Not sure if he's just saying that so i can buy it or what.

Keep in mind. I have a 12" L7 Q class. I dont want something better/slightly better, i want something that makes my current L7 look like crap as far as SQ is concerned.

It's more in the box design. If you had an spl enclosure built then you'd be missing out on lower frequencies.
ugh,, then i dont know what the hell was going on. With that other enclosure, i could only hear very low bass, and the midrange was simply not there really. So, now im even more confused.

Well finding a sub that is better sounding than and L7 is easy. Your subs sound like crap to you because your box is what's known as somewhat of a one note wonder. It will play very loud and a certain group of frequencies and then basically drops off the map to where other frequencies are missing. Simple fix, redo the box tuned in the mid 30's and virtually any sub will give you what you're wanting. The JL W7 is a legit very good sounding woofer, no doubt about it. Just overpriced a little.

Belive me i know lol.. I am in no way shape or form attempting to say my system is good in anyway lol.. Its simply to listen to while i find out exactly what kind of system i need to put together.

Let's have a look at this "custom" box and how it's sitting in your vehicle.

L7 is by no means great, but you should be able to get a reasonable bandwidth and good output from it. My guess is the box is way too small and that's why your response is peaky, also positioning sub and port and box differently in the vehicle (if possible) can make a dramatic difference.

If you can't get the L7 to sound decent and get loud throwing more money on new subs isn't going to help you.

Basically prime example of a poor box design done by someone who's extremely skewed on one side of the sound spectrum rather than a true flat response custom ported box design that plays great bandwidth. It cant be too big, cant be too little, port cant be too big or too small, cant be tuned too high or too low. Everything has to be the right size and tuning to get the best bandwidth. There's much more to designing a proper ported box than just having a big box and whatever random port ratio tuned to 32hz.

My guess is the box is way too small and that's why your response is peaky.
its just the opposite. The new box is 30inX15X15 with a 3in width port. My old ported box is about half the width of the new box and has a 1.5in wide port. The old (smaller) one sounds better. The bigger box doesnt have a midrange at all really. Just really low lows. The smaller one is much more 'punchier' and just seems to sound better

Well tons of guys on here will tell you to buy stuff that they prefer. My 2 cents is this. Rebuild your box to play all frequencies instead of just a few. The equipment you have is probably fine. People get all wrapped up in having the biggest, baddest, best equipment. Remember this. A system is almost always 15% equipment, 85% build. The best equipment in the world can't overcome a bad install. Focus on the build, not what you have.

The W7 is a great SQ sub, as mentioned above. If you can get it for cheap, it would be worth it.

The SSA Icon is a nice American made SQ sub.

ICON Series Sub Woofer

The Dayton HO's are nice too. I have the 10" D4 version and its has a nice fat bandwidth with no noticeable peaks in a sealed box. It would probably do better in ported, but haven't tried yet.

So, from what im gathering is that i can get a NSv3 12 and have a box built so that the frequency isnt so **** low right?. I think for me, i like the idea of having a sub with 2500rms but i dont want it to ONLY hit the very low frequencies and have the mids non-existent. I mean, if my L7 midrange frequencies seem to disappear in the bigger box and more "punchier" in a smaller box, then it seems to reason, I CAN have the NSv3 sound the way i want it to given its put in the proper enclosure right?.............. or am i wrong about that?.

It'll play music fine. Just you had a sh*tty overly low tuned, high port area per cubic feet ratio peaky @ss box. Thats why you want the proper sized box along with LOTS of power.

for your tastes, I'd say tune 34hz to 37hz with a medium/small sized box and lots of power. How big the box is does affect the frequency response along with how big the port and the over all port tuning. All of them are directly related to each other so dont judge off just one thing. You need to know much more extensive knowledge on designing ported boxes before making any assumptions.

Now stop cluttering the forum and stick to one friggen thread man.

Your box is @ 3 cubic feet before displacement. More like 2.25 cube at the very most after you count displacement of port, wood, and sub. That is inadequate for what is essentially the same piston as a round 15" woofer. You have just discovered "Hoffman's Iron Law".

I'd still like to see pictures of this box.
