Okay so i set my gain with a 50hz tone at -3db and i have a Alpine MRP-M1000 Powering 2 ALpine type R;s wired to 2ohms. They have only been played for about 15-25 hours. The smell is kinda tangy its only after its been playing for 45 mins or more though, did i set my gains wrong? i set it to read 46.0 volts and the chart says i could go up to 46.9 and since it is underrated birth sheet says 1150 watts so i could have used 48.9.

Okay so when i re-set it with the boost down can the gain be turned all the way up if it reads below the 46.9volts? I read somewhere it is bad to have it set past 75% no matter what....

turn the bass boost down and set your gains. If you cannot get the gain high enough with the bass boost down (meaning your signal voltage from your headunit is low), turn the bass boost up until you are capable of reaching your desired voltage.

you won't need to set it all the way up unless you have some ancient pos h.u.. all the new ones come minimally with 2v preouts just set it where needed.. if its all the way up make sure you have the sub setting on the h.u turned all the way up as that is the preout for it.. not bass boost but if you have an option that say sub with a number next to it that can go down into the negatives or up to like usually 15 max

Do you think i did any harm to the subs? they still sound normal..

Here's the problem with bass boost, especially in your case. You used a 50hz tone to set gains. With no eq thats fine as a -3 tone is a -3 within the bandpass of the woofer, more or less. Bass boost boosts bass, usually at 45hz. Your gains are set to give you just under your regular wattage, but as you get near 45hz your going to be asking even more of the amp since that's what you have boosted. If you used say 6dbs of boost, since a 50hz tone, which is still near 45 (it's seeing boost from the bass boost too, just not as much), your probably still getting another 1-2dbs extra at 45hz and that's pushing you into clipping. If you want to use bass boost (you shouldn't, it doesn't boost anything, your amp can only put out so much power, all your doing is making 45hz really loud, which sounds like shit, that's why people dont' tune at 45hz for daily) then you need to use a 45hz tone to set gains as well.
