I need a little computer help please!!

A buddy of mine asked me to help him out with his computer. He wants to format the hard drive and reinstall. I told him his restore disk should have an option for that. Well, it doesn't. All it has is reinstall/repair windows. There is nothing to the effect of format and reinstall. All the computers I have had, has had this option. What do I need to do. I don't wanna f up his computer and not be able to use it at all. His computer is a Compaq Presario R3000 laptop if it matters.

create a backup of his harddrive with norton ghost, save it on a dvd, reinstall windows and the backup

Well, he has already backed everything up. He wants to wipe it clean and reinstall. Just like it was when it was new. With nothing but XP on it.

well then just reinstall, when you choose that option it should give you the option to erase your current partition and then create a new one, which then will reformat the harddrive

Thats what I thought too, but it doesn't.

I appreciate the help though.

I'll look again to see if I missed it or something.
