How to setup a H/T with Car Subs

A bit delayed for a reply, but for the guy who wants a decent systen under $500:

I love Onkyo because I am using a 10 year old unit that keeps chugging and still sounds great. Even made a set of 5.1 Bose surround sound speakers sound better than with that atrocious Bose reciever. However, Bose made the sub setup super stupid (Power from reciever by stealing power from all 5 surround channels, wtf?!) so I'm in the market to build/buy a cheap 150-200 RMS solution.

As for using a car subwoofer for a home theatre setup, I am debating this route. reason being is that you can get some decent SQ subs for cheap, pair it with a decent plate amp and build a 3/4" MDF enclosure for a good deal and come out on top for power. SQ would hurt slightly, but the Surround reciever processor and plate amp should take care of alot of the sound quality anyhow, so I doubt many would tell the difference unless they got some really craptastic subs like Lanzar or Legacy.

Heck, I'd be willing to be an Alpine Type-S 10/12" would sound great for a fantastic price with a box and some filler. A 4 Ohm DVC wired to 8 Ohm would also slightly improve SQ though it'd reduce power output if you were working with a 4 Ohm plate amp, but they do sell them in 8 Ohm as well.

EDIT: Looking closer, the Type-S 12" has almost exactly the same specs as the JBL line of home theatre, http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=ES250PBK&hl=en&cid=9744303857932005&os=tech-specs#p but they only give 80RMS (240 peak plate amp) in that unit. You'd have to buy a much nice plate amp and mod the box to pull out the true ability of that speaker, and it costs more money. A 200 RMS plate amp from parts express costs $150, a Home Depot piece of MDF is what, $30? You can get a 12" Type-S DVC in 4 ohm for $85. So for the same price plus some time and a friends (or your) tools, and $10 of hardware, you'd have a system with 3 times the power and nearly identical sound.

how about you dont waste your time or money on nonsense //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
Clarify, assuming you mean my post?

What's the downside to getting 3x the power for your dollar with minimal SQ loss (assuming the 8 ohm load on a 200 RMS 8 ohm plate amp).

If you didn't mean me, then carry on //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

How can you tell which power supply matches your amp. Like I want to run my Digital designs 9512 in my house.
I could only imagine you would need to look at your car amplifiers limitations. It should be able to take a voltage between X volts and Y volts. Cars generally run between 13.8 and 14.4, but the amp maybe able to handle a 12 volt supply. Just check where the amp will cut out.

Assuming you meant using your car amplifier of course.

Buy a real 120VAC amplifier and do it the right way, not these halfassed approaches.
There's more to a "home theater" than just subs, do you have any ideas for the rest of it?
I love you Jim... YOu want to have my MOS-TUBE Hybrid babies?

The power supply suggestions are.
Truth

didnt know a bash 300 was halfassed ***
Jim isn't a ***... You are.

racks are cheaper
Huh? I'm confused.

You have a flat screen TV, yet are going to be using 6x9s in boxes with it?
Odd priorities...
Truth

How much do you have to spend?
About $1.
