Help with a box

I am new to car audio and recently invested in a set of rockford fosgate p3d212s and need a ported box. I know the cubic air space and tuning frequency need to match rockford specs, but is it ok to vary the depth or width of the box from the specs as long as frequency and cubic air space remain unchanged?

you can tune to whatever you want it doesn't have to necessarily match up. i would suggest talking to someone like RAM if you want a design or pro-rabbit who will build you a ported box and send it to you

Yeah. I would completely disregard the manufacturer's specs on box size. You can use some different programs to visualize what the sub will do (frequency response wise) in different boxes (sealed, ported, etc) of different sizes.

My guess is that that box is a compromise between sound quality and space. I would map the sub using WinISD and see if a larger box/different tuning would help.

thanks for the input but i am not really sure what frequency or anything I would want for my subs. As this is my first system I was gonna stick with the specs until i learned more and could develop more of a preference. the problem is i can't find a 12 inch deep box (as rockford specs) for sale and think getting one built would be pushing my budget. i can find 15 inch deep boxes with the same airspace and tuning would that work for my subs?

says its tuned to 38hz which is high for daily use. its fine, but its not targeted to sound good, its targeted to be the loudest for competitions. there are people that are ok with that tuning, but most like 30-34 for daily use

either will work, but dont get caught up on that "labyrinth venting" i dont think its anything special, someone will correct me if im wrong

yeah i've been hearing that lower hz are more popular so i may look into that. so the lower hz will get me better sound quality? and i've heard people who are ok with prefab and people who aren't. how much would it cost to have somebody build a box? ballpark

PM me your zip and I can get you a ballpark figure so you have an idea what the difference is in price.

No my build quality is far superior to prefab(as would almost anyone who builds on here).

hopefully u can see this picture good enough, the orange is tuned to 30hz the grey is tuned to 38hz

u can see the orange is 3db louder on the low end, which is what most people love hearing, the low hard hitting notes

but u can see the grey will get 3db louder around 45-50hz area which will be overall loudest, but that peak will be noticeable. all the frequencies wont be equal loudness, with the 38hz tuning its going to be twice as loud around 50hz than any other frequency.

*note* just because its tuned that high doesnt mean it will sound terrible, it will be ok, just most dont use that unless they are going to competitions

The higher you tune the more "peaky" the sound will get with in a narrow bandwidth. This normally makes listen and adjusting the stereo for a decent sound in a daily application very hard.
