help w/ install - bass going to speakers..

I installed my pioneer hu, ed nine.2 amp and atlas 15 tonight, in a 1994 explorer. First thing I should mention is I had this same setup in a 91' explorer and it worked great, did a 137.3.

Another thing to, is that when I was running the power cable to the amp from the battery, I needed to drill under the car. When I did this I hit a large bundle of cables. Some of them were cut open, so I tried as best I could to tape them up and/or put silicon all over them to prevent the bare wires from showing. This might have something to do with it, you tell me.

That said, my speakers (not sub) seem alot louder this time then they did on the other explorer, and I tried some bass test tones, and the speakers were recieving 100% of the bass and were making a flapping sound. I figured, thats way I percieved them as being so loud (I usually have my vol. on 35, this time I could get it up to 15 before it seemed like the speakers are about to blow)

The last thing is my HU is only turning on some of the time, sometimes its the cd player w/o the screen on, or both dont turn on, or they both turn on, etc.... this might be the wiring issue I mentioned.

anyways, I would greatly appreciate some help, If I need to describe something better, please tell me. Im quite tired right now, and I dont want to tinker with the stereo right now. thanks for any help.

Both the '91 and the '94 Explorer, if they're both 4-door, have factory amps. My guess is you bypassed the factory amp in the '91 but not in the '94, so you're running your head unit's output into a factory amp to be boosted again.

Let me check on that, but yes, the 91 did, because it was the eddie bauer w/ premium sound (it also had a 6" sub). I didn't think the 94 explorer did.

edit - I found the amp in the 94, but isnt the wiring harness meant to bypass it? Or do I need to do some more placing on the amp itself?

An amp bypass wire harness will come with an extra harness that connects the input plug to the output plug at the factory amp. Yours is probably still attached to the '91 explorer's amp (I think the '91 with a factory sub has two amps; one for the fronts and rears and one for the sub).

Ive been looking back and forth between the 94's amp and the 91's, and I see no sort of bypass harness on the amp. I got the 91's installed at a store, so I have no idea what they did. I think for the 91' it was also running into the amp. I dont know, can anyone help me out here?
